Overall Satisfaction with VMware vCenter

We use VMware vCenter as in two clusters as our VDI solution and another cluster as our server virtualization solution. The VDI part provides virtual machines to our students and employees and is managed in conjunction with Horizon. The server virtualization portion hosts our server infrastructure.

Pros

  • Server virtualization
  • Host management (Updates, patches, etc.)

Cons

  • Technical Support
  • Overall UI
  • It's enabled us to replace our end users' physical PCs on a less regular basis
There's no one main location to manage things. No class or book could ever teach someone how to manage the product as there are so many "special cases" where nothing's documented by what was VMware and it just comes with experience and/or hunting around 3rd party forums for help.
We initially used Citrix XenServer and made the switch to VMware vCenter due to it being less expensive at the time. That was some 15yrs ago and is no longer the case as Broadcom has changed the licensing scheme for their products which greatly increased the costs.

Do you think VMware vCenter delivers good value for the price?

No

Are you happy with VMware vCenter's feature set?

No

Did VMware vCenter live up to sales and marketing promises?

No

Did implementation of VMware vCenter go as expected?

Yes

Would you buy VMware vCenter again?

No

For hosting your VDI infrastructure it was well suited for use along with VMware Horizon, but since the products were sold off to separate companies, that's not the case any longer.
