Overall Satisfaction with Veeam Backup for Microsoft Office 365

We recently migrated from an on-premises Exchange server to Microsoft 365, and expanded our use of Veeam to also cover that. It's used to backup all 365 content company-wide.
  • Backs up cloud-based mail, Teams, and Sharepoint content using a single configuration.
  • Object-level restore capabilities.
  • Allows for enterprise-wide setup so additional users don't need configured as they added.
  • Initial configuration can be complex and documentation does not always align with the current state of Microsoft's frequently-changing infrastructure.
  • Certain parts of the Enterprise setup need repeated after any updates to Veeam components, but this is not made clear following the update, so you may see post-update failures.
  • Requires separate repository configuration from existing Veeam instances, and does not integrate into an existing Veeam presence.
  • Does not have an option for sending backups to tape, and Veeam B&R can't see Veeam O365 backup jobs to smoothly allow for setting this up.
  • This was a lateral impact for the most part, since we had previously had backups of the same content on-premises, and we replaced them with this product once we moved to the cloud.
  • There would be potentially greater value to users adopting use of this product without an existing backup system in place.
Backups are critical for any business, and are something we take very seriously. With out 365 migration we realized that we would need to find a new method of keeping this now-offsite data backed up, but as existing Veeam customers their solution seemed the easiest to implement. We piloted it during our migration and licensed it when we were fully migrated and in production.
Initial setup can be a bit involved, but once you have it going it mostly requires no interaction. Restores are simple and explorer-driven so finding teh item(s) you are looking forward is very simple.
In the best case scenario, backups are present for peace of mind. We have had occasion to restore data, however, most recently when a user who had previously left returned to our employment. Their mailbox had already been deleted from Microsoft's online systems, but using Veeam we were able to restore the contents of their now-empty mailbox back to the point where it was when they originally left.
We have not explored these options beyond the restore of data back to Office 365. The option to restore to PST is potentially useful, as the innate method O365 provides is somewhat complicated.
Full enterprise backup option - this allows you to set things p once to backup all components of Office 365 and all users who are added.
Object level restore - one specific item (single email, etc.) can be located and restored, without having to pull back an entire mailbox or server image.
This was the only product we looked at to fill this need.
Veeam's support across the board has always been excellent - they are responsive and thorough.

Did Veeam Backup for Microsoft 365 live up to sales and marketing promises?

Yes

Did implementation of Veeam Backup for Microsoft 365 go as expected?

Yes

Would you buy Veeam Backup for Microsoft 365 again?

Yes

Despite a less-than-complete integration, Veeam for O365 is a good fit for existing Veeam customers, since the interface and general use will be familiar. It also offers a comprehensive backup solution for an entire O365 footprint, without additional component licenses being required, so it is good for companies who intend to use multiple components of O365. Users who only need a single O365 component backed up or who want an all-in-one backup solution for both on-premises and cloud coverage may not be as pleased.
