AWS CloudTrail vs. Cisco Umbrella Easy Protect for MSPs

It is necessary to enable [AWS] Cloudtrail when using AWS in a production environment, otherwise you will not have any idea what is happening within your accounts. Third party monitoring applications will all require [AWS] CloudTrail to be enabled as well. I would not recommend it solely as a monitoring tool, to get the most out of it you must send the logs elsewhere. Either to Cloudwatch logs or a third party product.

If you have a large number of clients that need to access different products within your company it is a good fit. If you just need to protect access within your company, you'd probably just want to look into Cisco Umbrella. The MSP product is specifically tapered to [manage] access from 3rd parties outside of the company.

• [In my experience] Cost can easily get out of control with multiple trails on full logging
• Logs can be difficult to decipher

• Analyzing security logs can be challenging as the interface is rather slow and due to the large quantity of logged data.
• It is not always clear why a resource was blocked as there are 2 types of block lists
• Clients sometimes have to re-logon in order to get an updated policy rolled out.

I think in the end, CloudTrail has more features and you can dive deeper inside the logs so it depends on your usage and what you expect in the end to make the right choice, I would say that both tools are really useful and bring a lot of benefits to I.T. companies.

• Not always clear which block list caused an access issue. [There are] several places that need to be checked.
• Client policies take a while to get updated, sometimes need to re-logon
