AWS CodeDeploy vs. F5 BIG-IQ Centralized Management

Getting the code from Git Hub, uploading it to the repository, making changes, and deploying it to a specific environment makes AWS tremendous and easy to work with. Once you know how to do it, it is easy to replicate. On the other hand, if you are new, it gets confusing, and you need guidance on the steps to take not to compromise the application.

F5 BIG-IQ Centralized Management works perfectly in Software upgrades and simple daily changes. We are successfully using it to create and or delete objects. It doesn`t works well when we need reports. I usually have to create custom scripts to get a list of objects, for example. Performance is also something that could be improved in Big-IQ

• Common system level changes like cipher suite customization, ssh protocol settings etc can be pushed to all F5 gear through one click of a button
• Enterprise standard templates for profiles/protocols etc., can be efficiently managed across F5 gear through a single interface

• There is one limitation is it can't do multi-tier apps
• It is not possible to control the order in which deployment occurs if more than one deployment attempts to run at the same time
• AWS CodeDeploy does not integrate with GitHub

• The second site product does not do what we need and we are forced to write our own scripts
• Many of the alerting that was in enterprise management is no longer in F5 BIG-IQ Centralized Management

There is some room for improvement around RBAC. The access to certain features, options and menus is not straightforward and not that granular.

Here is where AWS as a whole stepped up big. The UI is more intuitive and easy to use. The separation is clear, and the guides are abundant. They still need to create starter tutorials for newcomers so we don't lose much time learning/teaching others. Having someone with basic knowledge and examples where they can gain experience will make it better.

I feel pinning policies are killing you guys when it comes to being able to add multiple LTMs that have different naming conventions.

The support is a bit complex and not straightforward. It seems there aren't many engineers supporting this platform. There are many components in the solution that makes it complex for troubleshooting. Documentation needs to be more in depth, and I have opened a few cases around cluster sync issues and objects stalled. In the end I was able to find and fix the problem.

Jenkins supports a lot of plugings. Also with Jenkins, it is possible to manage everything through our own server. Those are 2 points where I rate Jenkins as one of the best DevOps Tool

Of all the centralized Management platforms I have ever used, BIG-IQ is the worst. It constantly breaks and requires fixing in some way or another.

• AWS CodeDeploy has reduced the engineer involvement in deployments
• Our QA team has been able to effectively deploy tickets for testing, and our Release Managers can manage production deployments
• Progress indicators have given us a better baseline for deployment times, which is helpful for time-sensitive releases
