Codacy vs. Podman.io

I recommend it for companies that use several programming languages, as it supports several languages ​​such as Java, Javascript, Python, among others. However, for companies that use only one programming language, there are specific tools for each language that can be more complete in this scenario. I do not recommend it for companies that only use open source software, in which case there are other tools available.

While it always depends on your use case, I believe security concerns of need for root user is a concern, so it is worth considering daemonless container service over Docker, which works just as good and has support for docker compose. Another good reason is the licensing for enterprise usage, which podman has no restrictions for. It’s also a great choice for OpenShift integration, which is seamless and works well with Rancher as well.

• Seamless and easy integrations with GitHub for fantastic pipeline of viewing errors.
• Intuitive UI which is easy to customize and built-in patterns recommendations and security checks helps to fix issues faster.
• Metrics and duplication and complexity easily identify areas that need attention to fix it easy.

• It’s daemonless, so somewhat more secure.
• It works exceptionally well and is compatible with Docker compose
• Podman Desktop actually makes individual usage also pretty easy.
• It can be used as Docker alternative with almost no additional steps

• There should be customization to get code quality for your own projects if standards are provided.
• Offline or a standalone application is much needed from Codacy to get local support.
• Spots a lot of errors and small ones that don't affect much about quality and are de-facto standards.

• Podman desktop is getting more stable with each version, but does need more UX friendliness as well.
• Official support for development tools and IDEs is missing for most tools
• It works well with Kubernetes, but I wouldn’t mind additional improvements

Even though it is paid while SonarQube is free, we chose Codacy because it is simpler to configure and maintain the implemented rules. In addition, it offers support for the main programming languages ​​on the market, ensuring that we can continue to use it if we want to use other languages ​​in new products.

Podman is Daemonless, lightweight and doesn’t charge us for commercial usage, so it’s a relief for startups. Minikube and Rancher are a bit more complex for our use cases; so we keep things simple, fast and secure with Podman that can easily be managed with Podman Desktop and other works with our docker-compose based projects without issues.

• We definitely feel more secure.
• We do not suffer from memory or cpu overuses as it uses fedora coreOS which is lightweight
