It is a safety switch that needs to be engaged constantly to protect my computer from anyone or any organization wishing to gather data on my activity. My research suggested that a VPN may slow my search speed, but I have not found that to be the case. In fact, I can not even tell the difference in search speed when I am connected to the VPN or disconnected.
