ExpressVPN
I leave it connected all the time, whether I am browsing or not. It is a safety switch that needs to be engaged constantly to protect my computer from anyone or any organization wishing to gather data on my activity. My research suggested that a VPN may slow my search speed, but I have not found that to be the case. In fact, I can not even tell the difference in search speed when I am connected to the VPN or disconnected.

Alternatives Considered
ExpressVPN
I took a look at NordVPN, but the ratings for ExpressVPN were higher. More servers and faster transfer times made it a simple decision. I am glad I made the right choice.

OpenVPN its a well known solution but it pales compared to WireGuard in terms of perfomance, speed and easey implementation.
Also it required less resources.
