Considered Both Products
F5 BIG-IP Access Policy Manager (APM)
Chose F5 BIG-IP Access Policy Manager (APM)
I like the fact that F5 BIG-IP Access Policy Manager is part of the F5 stack, so I don't have to use multiple platforms to support my identity services, everything in one place, one support team.
Chose F5 BIG-IP Access Policy Manager (APM)
I haven't been in identity until F5 BIG-IP Access Policy Manager, and I don't have a desire to go to another platform.

we were already using big ip ltm for servers so this product allowed us to use another layer 5-7 in the same device without the need to complex our enviornment.
Chose F5 BIG-IP Access Policy Manager (APM)
F5 BIG-IP Access Policy Manager integrates extremely well with the rest of our F5 infrastructure which is a big plus and provides us with a familiar user interface, but it isn't as scalable in its current iteration as something like Zscaler Private Access.

BIG-IP product is well known in the industry for its robustness, which was one of the prime reasons for selecting the same. Also as a certified professional, I have hands-on experience. The other products were evaluated, however BIG-IP outweigh them all. In regards to …
Chose F5 BIG-IP Access Policy Manager (APM)
F5 BIG-IP Access Policy Manager (APM) is good compared to other solutions listed above due to various reasons and the foremost among them would be vendor popularity. From an administration perspective, it helps when you have products from same vendor performing well and F5 …
Chose F5 BIG-IP Access Policy Manager (APM)
We looked at Okta and Netscaler. We already had the F5 in-house for strictly Load Balancing purposes. So since we already had it was an easy solution for Access Management. We also use the ASM (web application firewall).

I think that the platform is well suited to many Remote Access VPN solutions, but I also think there is a lot of room for improvement on the backend. If you are hoping to deploy your APM solution across many different datacenters or colos, it may not be the best choice for the final solution.

Cons
F5
  • There's some more advanced configurations within OAuth that I think could be fleshed out and easier to approach.
  • There's a lot of things in F5 BIG-IP Access Policy Manager policies that I find myself recreating every policy. An easier way to copy objects from one to policy to another.

Usability
F5
If F5 BIG-IP Access Policy Manager usability is fine it's not hard to use if you read the documentation but it does feel dated and could use a responsive design update to modernize user interface to current standards.

F5
  • Simplified our approach to company-wide VPN solutions greatly by allowing us to use a single product instead of multiple products like we had before
  • Can handle 15000-20000 users at once with no issues
  • Was able to configure to support users travelling with 4G connections on their laptops and accommodate constant changing IP addresses
