Likelihood to Recommend Waypoint is very similar to teraform , it can run a ec2 machine, an ECS service, Azure containers, Google containers and many more , which is one of the most advantageous thing about waypoint . The team that we are working with has a hybrid customer based in multiple clouds like AWS, Azure and GCP.
Read full review Spinnaker suits well for applications which are stateless and can adapt to an immutable architecture of deployment. But for applications which are stateful and cannot afford to spin up new servers for every deployment doesn't go well with Spinnaker. It can handle only deployments which are VM based and cannot support deployments to serverless architecture like AWS Lambda etc.
Read full review Pros The infrastructure as a code concept is simple and easy to learn in waypoint You can integrate waypoint with various code repositories like Github, Gitlab etc The waypoint UI provides a interactive interface to view the status of your builds Read full review Fast deployments. Can be integrated with a good variety of other products. Also provides some insights from your environment. Read full review Cons Need more controlling environment which is missing in waypoint The UI lags sometimes which can be problematic at times It uses HCL language which is outdated , can be moved to YAML which is used by most of the tools Need to copy the endpoint everytime from waypoint to my browser It forces me to install a server Read full review It does NOT support CFN based deployments Windows based systems finds it difficult to onboard to Spinnaker. Pipeline level access authorisation is not there. Support for EBS volume encryption is probably missing. Attach/detach EBS volumes during deployments is difficult. No support to deploy the artifacts without re-creating the servers. Only pure immutable deployment are allowed. Open-source - so good and bad! Spinnaker on its own has 10 underlying micro services. Managing Spinnaker needs a focussed platform approach. User authentication is easy but authorisation management is not straight forward. Debajit Kataki Sr. Devops Mgr. Read full review Alternatives Considered As waypoint is developed by HashiCorp which is also a developer of teraform , the trust was already there . Moreover the simplicity of ease of access made our choice even more clearer against its competitors. The competitors were good but weren't able to compete with the versatility and suite of application and functionality provided by WAYPOINT.
