IBM DevOps Code ClearCase vs. Siemens Totally Integrated Automation (TIA) Portal

IBM Rational ClearCase might be better suited for a smaller / simpler code base. Larger code bases really slow it down... but then again there are better alternatives out there for source control

Well suited: It is a software that allows to simulate PID controllers is a valuable educational resource. Users can learn how PID controllers maintain the desired value of a process variable, such as temperature, pressure, or flow, by adjusting system inputs in simulation. It is a program that allows to simulate electro-pneumatic systems can be extremely useful to understand the integration of electronic components with pneumatic actuators, valves, and other elements in automated control systems. Less appropiate: The software appears to be resource intensive in terms of storage and execution. This means that it requires a significant amount of hard disk space and good processing power to run efficiently. On computers with limited or older hardware, the software may run slowly or not be able to execute all of its functions. This is an important limitation for users with limited access to high specification equipment.

• Rational ClearCase is excellent for handling versioning and branching. No other tool I've used has the depth that ClearCase has when it comes to handling complex branching scenarios and identifying where certain versions of particular files are within a particular configuration.
• Rational ClearCase handles parallel development of many dependent applications really well.
• The use of ClearCase Views to switch between projects and configurations is extremely convenient as opposed to the local workstation model of the competitors.

• Allows the simulation of HMI screens
• integrates the necessary software to simulate PLC's and link them with HMI screens.
• It is useful when handling Grafcet.
• Easy to program in function blocks FBD.

• Amount of resources it takes up on the hard drive
• excessive consumption of execution resources (RAM, GPU)
• some licensing problems that are sometimes not recognized
• the existing saturation of icons on the main programming screen

If development is centrallized to one location and your company releases hundreds of customized versions of your software per year, then ClearCase is the best tool for managing the complexity of multiple versions of customized software. If your company has globally distributed development, then I'd recommend Team Foundation Server over ClearCase. If your organization uses Agile Methodologies, then I'd recommend TFS with GIT.

• Managed code versioning for many years.
• Only one person can edit code at a time - slows processing down.
• IBM is an expensive product to support.
