Oracle
Oracle service bus is great to quickly proxy any legacy services exposed as soap service. It's well suited for aggregating multiple services on a single endpoint. We can point to multiple endpoints on the business service and use a round-robin approach to access the endpoints. It's not well suited for data transformation and quick preview of mappings and transformations. It's not great on path to cloud transformation.

Taking data from various sources including files, databases, web services, applying some complex rules, transforming, aggregating and producing a result. This is what Spotfire Streaming does best.
- If one needs connectivity to special services as secured databases or web services, building interactive web apps, those are probably tasks that shall be addressed with different tools.

TIBCO BusinessEvents is part of the CEP (Complex Event Processing) family, this means that it fits perfectly in all those scenarios where a correlation between incoming events is required. Where a stateful process is necessary. It does not fit well for a kind of Process Orchestrator scope, where simple events are coming in, and there is a well-defined behavior the system, would have on incoming request, and no particular reason to use a rule engine and its complexity. Anyway, there are particular cases where BusinessEvents would be a good actor in orchestrating a portion of CEP solutions activities

Pros
Oracle
  • The Oracle Service Bus makes the management of web services extremely easy. Through its point and click interface, the web service endpoints can be easily modified.
  • The administration console provides useful dashboards to diagnose any service issues.

  • Processing events in real-time with real low latency and high throughput.
  • 100% visual program language, which can be extended by common languages like Java, Python and .NET.
  • Reduced time to prototype, create an application and deployment, which reduces the software lifecycle.
  • Real robust engine and server. Barely heard of customers having issues in production.

  • It allows us to build rule-based model-driven application, to collect, filter, analyze, correlate various business events in our real-time event flow
  • It makes various business applications/components easy to integrate (loosely decoupled but chained via the events flow) together
  • Its distributed rule engine and embedded in-memory data grid (ActiveSpace) gives us a lot of flexibility and room to play with a large amount of rules and data with high performance

Cons
Oracle
  • Message reporting tied to a database seems counter productive. Better options to eliminate that would not only minimize the maintenance hassle but also gives more ease to manage the product.
  • Polling feature isn't very efficient where the end point JMS queues may still have JMS connections despite not enabling the corresponding poller proxy services.
  • Unable to deploy multiple web services in one go from the OSB Web console.

Spotfire
  • Being a niche tool, there's not much community support
  • It is on prem, making it slow to boot. not cloud native (It could be that it is our org's issue)
  • The dev environment is very tough to understand for large projects due to the wire style UI/UX

  • Better integration with R versions and better debug for R-scripts in Spotfire. There are inconsistencies in syntactic expressions accepted by R-studio and not accepted in Spotfire. Accelerating the debug would be awesome. Having a command like View (data frame) that directly output in the dashboard would be a great accelerator.

We have had not many issues with Oracle Service Bus and it's very stable for our requirements. It's highly available and helps us implement Tier1 applications on it.

Usability
Oracle
It's an excellent enterprise service bus and has very stable features. We have been using it since 2008. We did hit into some issues. But, recreating the service helped fix many issues. Also, deployment to various environments was easy. Also, the plugin on Eclipse helps to build proxy and business services quick and easy.

The usability is good in terms that it gets well integrated with the Spotfire suite but the only few issues I have is the tough UI/UX (learning curve, if the project is huge) and unable to find many users and devs to help with the queries. At the end it is solely based on the documentation provided which is never enough

TIBCO Business Events is one of the best in business and very well suitable for organization like ours where there are large volumes of data that need to be processed on daily basis. It helps in real time monitoring of data and supports writing complex rules which makes it easier to get the work done. It also helps in fraud detection by identifying suspicious activities and integrate with other systems for a comprehensive view.

Support Rating
Oracle
We had some issues with MQ connectivity through OSB and our experience was poor with the support team. They do respond. But, it felt like we are ignored and we had bad support. We had to escalate and things used to get dragged for weeks before we get more quality questions on how to pursue investigation.

We are using Dataflow (by Google). The development time in Spotfire Streaming is definitely shorter because its GUI based. Dataflow handles late arrivals after the window closes, not sure Spotfire Streaming can do that. Dataflow can run GCP as a managed service which is why we chose that tool for our new product.

I was not part of evaluation of the products in this space in my organization. But I feel BE is better in terms of RIO if compared with some commercial products from Orcle, IBM and SAP. I strongly feel difficulty in using cloud native features is one big shortcoming in current product offering. This will tend customer like us to explore options that are well suited with ur cloud first vision.

  • Positive : Real-time event stream processing helps handle transactions very efficiently.
  • Negative : Earlier versions of BE (5.0 & 5.1) had major issues in data handling in cache that impacted the data integrity of the application.
