Percona Server vs. SAP IQ

Percona Server for MySQL covers 100% of our requirements in terms of our OLTP traffic and provides the High Availability levels required through a typical primary and 2 replica's using semi-synchronous replication. We're able to scale our writes using sharding, but a true distributed database would be a great option on top of this. In terms of OLAP traffic, we leverage columns stores available, but Percona Server fairs well

Does data compression very well, produces query results very quickly, ability to scale up as data volume/size grow in an organization, row level versioning is in memory and hence the speed. It is a very stable product for large enterprises. More detailed documentation on how to use this product in the initial stages would be really welcome.

• Inserting millions of rows of data takes seconds.
• Aggregating billions of rows of data is insanely fast (compared to Oracle, Sybase, and SQL Server).

• Better documentation
• A better UI

• The pricing schedule is a bit expensive and cumbersome.

It is easy to install and use. Using it along with Percona Monitoring and Management makes it even easier to use.

We are using opensource so we have not used customer support.

SAP IQ support is top-notch. I prefer starting all my SAP IQ support tickets with their Instant Messenger, where the majority of our issues are resolved. If it makes it to their ticketing system, they are very prompt at responding and very knowledgeable in the platform.

Performance and stability sets Percona Server for MySQL apart from the rest. Percona embraces the upstream version and contributes towards the upstream version making MySQL stronger on two fronts and thus having a much larger community. Many quality contributions have been made by Percona into the base code. Percona provides great tools to support Percona Server for MySQL and this makes the monitoring and management easier

SAP IQ is perhaps an under-marketed product in the sense that it is able to scale up very well and perform much faster and more efficiently than other products such as Oracle - when we ran multiple large queries on both Sybase IQ and Oracle, we found that that results were much faster in Sybase IQ and this gave the confidence to go for this product.

• At the performance level, it maintains and even improves other open-source databases such as MariaDB or some commercial ones such as Oracle.
• If we compare it with MySQL, we could have up to 50% improvement in performance.
• For some small companies or startups, the price of the complete solution and the support can be a bit high.

• The ROI over a number of years has been good. Seeing as how we use it for billing, it has an obvious ROI to us.
• As they have been modifying their licensing structure, it's been difficult to keep up and understand how they work.
