    SUSE Virtualization (formerly Harvester)

    Score10 out of 10
N/ASUSE Virtualization (formerly Harvester) is an open-source hyperconverged infrastructure (HCI) platform built on Kubernetes. It runs on bare metal servers and combines KVM-based virtual machine management, distributed block storage, and networking in a single cluster. It manages virtual machines (VMs) and containers together, and SUSE positions it as an open-source alternative for operators moving off traditional virtualization stacks.N/A

    VMware ThinApp (discontinued)

    Score5.2 out of 10
N/AVMware ThinApp was application virtualization software allowing legacy web applications to run on newer OSs, post-migration, also for running apps across a variety of devices (e.g. flash drives, locked-down computers, etc.) for accessibility and security.N/A

It's great for provisioning any kind of virtual servers, but for now, we use it to provision only servers for Rancher managed Kubernetes clusters. But we are considering to provision also virtual servers for all kinds of needs on SUSE Harvester in the near future, as it's getting more and more mature with every release.

VMware ThinApp is really great for simple packaging projects, standalone apps, or older apps that needs specific runtimes or environment which are not available on target operating systems. Integration with VMware Horizon is simple, and deployment is easy by using shares for storing captured apps, or MSI packages for deploying by group strategies.

    Cons
    SUSE
    • It takes expertise to set up SUSE Harvester for production
    • You need to get used to SUSE Harvester to be as "fluent" as in VMWare ESXi
    • You need to well prepare for system upgrades

    • VMware seems to have abandoned the product (no functionality evolutions, only security patches).
    • VMware ThinApp is really difficult to buy standalone, it comes packaged with other products.

We used ESXi for years and were happy with it. Then we implemented Rancher managed Kubernetes clusters with nodes provisioned on VMware ESXi. Later, when SUSE Harvester came out, we started to provision SUSE Rancher nodes on Harvester. Both VMware ESXi and SUSE Harvester are great products, and I think - we are keeping both, at least for now, when SUSE Harvester is a young project.

The only application that I have ever used that does exactly what VMware ThinApp does is Cameyo, and VMware is light years ahead of them in terms of usability. VMWare is the industry standard for application virtualization, and they do this by making a powerful product that is remarkably simple to use and top it off with A1 customer support.

    • VMware ThinApp allowed us to maintain older apps, avoiding refactoring costs.
    • ThinApp used with VMware Horizon is great to separate desktop and app management, allowing to fine-tune desktop delivery to end users.
