ALEKS has emerged as an invaluable tool in the field of education, offering personalized learning experiences tailored to individual students. It enables students to learn at their own pace and review topics as needed, effectively adapting to their unique needs and knowledge levels. Users have found this flexibility highly beneficial, as it allows ALEKS to quickly bridge gaps in prior academic knowledge and accelerate learning for all students. By providing interactive support for English learners, including dual-language assistance and an interactive dictionary with visuals, videos, and examples, ALEKS has successfully reduced instances of student plagiarism. Educators and schools appreciate the program for its individualized instruction and online platform. ALEKS is particularly useful for reviewing math skills, preparing for classes and assessment tests, and engaging in various math-related activities. It is widely adopted by math departments in schools for warm-up exercises, independent work, homework assignments, and differentiated instruction. ALEKS also facilitates student-centered classrooms and supports blended learning by effectively tracking student progress. Moreover, it serves testing purposes such as conducting research on educational software and games. The structured nature of ALEKS, featuring elements like videos, music, and games, keeps students engaged throughout their learning journey. While some users have reported limited benefits in subjects like Chemistry, ALEKS stands out in closing knowledge gaps in foundational math and enabling student success in high school math courses. The prompt customer service provided by ALEKS deserves recognition for its quick problem resolution and helpful assistance.

Comprehensive Tool: Users have found ALEKS to be a comprehensive tool that reduces the burden and complexity of studying mathematics when properly implemented with the course. Some users appreciate the set up of ALEKS and find the text videos helpful for introducing new subjects, although they mention that the videos alone are not sufficient for learning everything. Overall, reviewers feel that ALEKS offers a comprehensive solution for studying math.

Gap Filling and Accelerated Learning: ALEKS has features that help fill in gaps in prior academic knowledge and accelerate learning for all students. English learners particularly appreciate the dual-language support and interactive dictionary with visuals, videos, and examples provided by ALEKS. This feature helps them grasp mathematical concepts more effectively.

Boosts Long-Term Retention: ALEKS is highly regarded by students for boosting long-term retention through mixed review. The visual pie chart allows students to see their own progress, motivating them to complete their program and advance to the next grade. Students love being able to work at their own pace while also having a clear understanding of their progress through the pie chart feature in ALEKS.

Monotonous and Boring Interface: Users have frequently expressed their dissatisfaction with the interface of ALEKS, describing it as monotonous and boring. They find the presentation of exercises to be unengaging and uninspiring.

Costly and Difficult to Get Administrators on Board: Many users mention that ALEKS is quite expensive, making it challenging to convince administrators to invest in the program. The cost factor becomes a barrier for both students and institutions.

Unrealistic Questions and Bugs: A number of users have voiced frustration regarding the unrealistic questions presented by ALEKS, which do not align with what professors typically ask on tests. Additionally, they report encountering various bugs within the software, such as certain notations being unrecognized or marked as incorrect. These issues contribute to a sense of frustration and hinder the overall user experience.

Based on user reviews, the software has received the following recommendations:

  1. It is recommended to use the software only if the school is a one-to-one school. Users suggest passing on the software unless there is no one available to teach or if the user is in college and everyone is scattered with placement.

  2. Considering using the software with another student to improve skills. The independent component is helpful for older students and allows for monitoring and feedback from teachers, tutors, or parents.

  3. Sending students emails/alerts of upcoming assignments and due dates is recommended. This feature would help students stay organized and keep track of their academic responsibilities.

Most of the department uses ALEKS for developmental classes in an emporium model setting. One section of traditional developmental is sometimes taught.
  • Helps students fill in gaps in their learning
  • Allows students to work at their own pace
  • Encourages learning
  • Reports can confuse students
  • Limited ways to solve a problem
  • Can lead to mimicry
ALEKS does a great job of helping students fill in the gaps in their learning so that they have a solid foundation to move on to higher-level mathematics. It works very well with self-motivated students. It doesn't seem to work as well with less motivated students.
  • Allowed some students to complete more than one course in a term.
  • Can lead to financial savings for students who are able to complete more than one class.
  • Allows for stacking of developmental classes.
I was not able to find any other products on your list, that I feel are really like ALEKS. I think of ALEKS as more of a teaching platform whereas other platforms I have used--MyMathLab, WebAssign, Knewton--are more of a homework platform.

ALEKS is used by the entire Math Department at my school weekly. We use it in a variety of forms, including warm-up, independent work, homework as well as a tool to differentiate instruction to the individual learning needs of each student. To help close knowledge gaps in foundational math that prevent students from succeeding in high school math courses.
  • Differentiating instruction
  • Tailoring individualized curriculum to cater to each student's unique needed.
  • Lengthy Knowledge Check must be passed for instruction to begin.
  • It does not connect data to Schoology (learning management/grading system used by the school district).
Among the specific scenarios where ALEKS is well suited would be independent work time during which each student could work on improving foundational math skills or on practicing topics recently learned in class. ALEKS is less appropriate when instructing more involved topics (i.e., Algebra 2 material), which would require whole-class instruction by the teacher first.
  • Improved foundational math skills
  • Improved student engagement in math courses
Compared to other assistant instructional technology used in my school district, ALEKS is a clear winner. We tried using IXL.com, which is second best after ALEKS, but it did not provide the individualized instruction tailored to each student's learning needed in math that ALEKS provides. Kuta technology is excellent for generating Math Content (i.e., tests, practice problems), but again, it does not provide enough differentiation.
We did not need much support because installing and running ALEKS on Schoology was relatively easy; the department followed the steps outlined in the user manual on how to install ALEKS and were able to do so quickly. ALEKS help team has been helpful, but overall we did not need their help.
