What is Apigee API Management?
Apigee API Management is Google Cloud's managed platform for building, managing, and securing application programming interfaces (APIs). It places an API proxy layer between backend services and the internal or external clients that call them. Security, traffic management, data mediation, and analytics are applied at the proxy, so the backend services can change without disrupting the applications that consume them. The primary users are API producers, who build and operate APIs, and the developers who consume them.
API Proxies and Policies
Apigee proxies support REST, SOAP, gRPC (Google's remote procedure call framework), and GraphQL APIs. It can also proxy internal microservices managed in a service mesh as REST APIs. Behavior is configured with more than 50 prebuilt policies covering security, rate limiting, quotas, caching, transformation, and mediation, without writing code. Custom scripts, such as JavaScript, extend the policies.
API Catalog and Design
API hub is a catalog that consolidates API specifications built or deployed anywhere, so developers can find APIs and govern them to a consistent standard. Gemini Code Assist in Apigee generates OpenAPI specifications from natural language, uses the API hub catalog for context, and generates mock servers for parallel development. It is available as part of the Gemini Code Assist Enterprise subscription.
Security and Operations
- Advanced API Security detects undocumented and unmanaged APIs linked to Google Cloud Layer 7 (L7) load balancers and assesses managed APIs against security standards. It uses machine learning (ML) dashboards to identify API abuse from bot alerts.
- Monitoring shows near real-time API traffic and latency and supports debugging an API proxy flow in the console or in a distributed tracing tool. Advanced API Operations flags anomalous traffic patterns.
- Analytics include built-in dashboards and custom dashboards for API quality and developer engagement.
Developer Portals and Monetization
Individual APIs or resources are bundled into API products and published to integrated developer portals or to portals built on Drupal, with developer onboarding and access control. Rate plans support API monetization, including billing, payment models, and revenue share.
Deployment and Pricing
Apigee runs as a fully managed service on Google Cloud. Apigee hybrid runs the containerized runtime in the customer's own Kubernetes cluster, on premises or in another public cloud, while management stays consistent. Google Cloud lists pay-as-you-go and subscription pricing.
Product Lineage
Apigee API Management succeeds Apigee Edge. Documentation, reviews, and listings under the Apigee Edge name, and under Apigee X, describe earlier versions of the product.
