Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We use AWS Compute Optimizer in our AWS department mostly for AWS compute resource deployment. It suggests the best use of our resources and tries to reduce cost as much as possible. It improves the scalability and reduces our efforts in trying to understand what resource or resources are not working as expected or identifies which resource is currently not in use.

Pros

  • Detailed analysis of resource uses
  • Suggestion to reduce cost
  • Easy to use

Cons

  • Although it works great for AWS services but they should give a third party cost add option
  • Many features only work when there is large data available
  • sometime suggestions are not relevant to business problem we address

Likelihood to Recommend

[AWS Compute Optimizer] is well suited for every company which uses AWS services and doesn't want to spend money for resources that they are not using. It is greatly helpful in terms of reducing cost and optimizing workflows. Although third-party integration cost cannot be calculated it is still very useful for understanding resources cost and efficient utilization of resources.

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

AWS Compute Optimizer is being used by the organization on a project whereby we are trying to understand costs and various cost savings opportunities. Not only can it help us detect idle instances that are not being used anymore, [but] it also helps us to find ways to downsize certain instances that are operating inefficiently. The business problem it addresses is mainly cost and financial management.

Pros

  • Cost reduction
  • Infrastructure management
  • Problem detection

Cons

  • Granular insights
  • Automatic scaling management

Likelihood to Recommend

AWS Compute Optimizer works well if you are using AWS as the core tech stack. If you are on mixed cloud deployments, then it is less appropriate because it can only give you a partial view. It might be helpful to use a tool that aggregates the usage and billing data from multiple platforms instead.
