AWS system manager helps Ec2 management easier

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

Aws system manager helps team to reduce the time spend on managing Ec2 instances. We have a scheduled process running everyday that copy new files to more than 100 instances . With AWS System manager, we were able to the copy process as part of the normal update process process and it was very easy to copy the files and doesn't even require SSH access to the instances. We don't need to update anything even if we change the instances as we can target based on the resource tags.

Pros

  • Copy files to a group of instance with particular tag
  • Enable CW agent and push metrics to CW
  • Easy to install software in a group of instances.

Cons

  • I would like to see the Search feature improved a bit more.
  • UI is little bit confusing initially

Return on Investment

  • Reduced team's time spent on EC2 management
  • Patch management
  • Remote access
