What is Azure Data Box?
Azure Data Box is a series of hardware appliances, devices that move data to Azure when busy networks aren’t an option. Data Box users can move large amounts of data to Azure when they are limited by time, network availability, or costs, using common copy tools such as Robocopy. All data is AES-encrypted, and the devices are wiped clean after upload, in accordance with NIST Special Publication 800-88 revision 1 standards.
Moving stored or in-flight data into the cloud is a challenge. Data Box devices provide solutions for these scenarios.
- Data Box, Data Box Disk, and Data Box Heavy are offline data transfer devices which are shipped between your datacenter and Azure. Data Boxes use standard NAS protocols (SMB/CIFs and NFS), use AES encryption to protect data, and perform a post-upload sanitization process to ensure that all data is wiped clean from the device.
- Data Box Gateway is an online data transfer product - a virtual appliance for moving data in and out of Azure.
