Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We use BMC AMI Devx as part of our mainframe developmeny lifecycle. We mainly use this to change codes, do testing and to deploy upadtes. Our development teams mainly use it as it is effective in quickly understand the issues and saves time for our team.

Pros

  • Integration with GIT
  • Automation in testing works really well and reduce manual efforts

Cons

  • Documentation can be made simple
  • The current UI is good but can be improved and get modern touch

Likelihood to Recommend

Works well for daily mainframe development. It is apt for dev teams managing complex mainframe applications and also debugging is very helpful. It simplify the workflows and make the process smooth.

Positive experience using BMC File-AID for IMS

Business problem:
Unloading the product IMS database and loading this copy into another IMS instance.
Then, conducting multi-unit testing of the new instance.
Solution:
File-AID for IMS was used for this purpose.
Existing PL/I layouts were used for data segments formatting.

Pros

  • File-AID for IMS automatically scans the hierarchy to retrieve all dependent child and grandchild segments. This ensures referential integrity—data remains functionally related in the new environment.
  • File-AID for IMS allows you to "overlay" your existing PL/I macro formatting directly onto an IMS segment.
  • File-AID for IMS provides powerful selection criteria.

Cons

  • BMC File-AID for IMS is a fairly mature product with a "green screen" design. From this perspective, it has virtually no problem areas.

File-AID for IMS is less appropriate:
a) This is a tool for experienced mainframe users
b) Using File-AID for large-scale, one-time mass migrations can be expensive in terms of resource consumption. Unloading such massive data requires specialized utilities.

BMC AMI DevX is an enterprise software platform used mainly by companies like us which run huge mainframe -based systems such as business retails and ecommerce backends. It generally helps us in managing, testing backends , dubgging and improving the large Tata cliq applications especially in mainframe systems. It integrates the order processing, testing automation, dubgging tools , ai code insights. It is really helpful in inventory management, payments, and billing engines.

  • Realtime development ops ecosystem is less seamless
  • Daily features drops sometimes

I would definitely recommend my colleague this application but only in condition when there is a huge enterprise setup and daily business has lot of transaction to track, also we should have a huge inventory and supply chain management with that , this tools mainly helps in order processing, inventory management, payments, warehouse logic and billing engines which makes our mainframe strong and fast , realtime decision making is easy and fast.

Cons

  • Documentation is poor. It is difficult follow and implement always needs some support people explain the feature
  • More quality issues and support case takes time to resolve the problem
  • Many tools required considerable training. Needs improvement on UIs

Tool provides good functionalities, but recent upgrade had more issues which made the user experience to go down. It is main tool that our team provide application teams to work on but it failed with various issue, and it look longer for us to resolve due to support delays.

BMC AMI DevX is used very widely in the organisation to view/edit flat and VSAM files. Developers rely heavily on the ability to see data in a formatted fashion and modify if needed.
