What is ChatGPT Work?
ChatGPT Work is an Autonomous AI Agent for completing longer, multi-step knowledge-work assignments from natural-language instructions. It gathers context from files, connected applications, websites, and permitted desktop tools; plans an approach; performs the required actions; and produces deliverables such as documents, spreadsheets, presentations, reports, analyses, dashboards, and interactive Sites.
Users can review the proposed approach, answer questions, change direction, and approve consequential actions while a task is underway. OpenAI currently identifies GPT-6 as the model family supporting the product.

ChatGPT Work is purchased as part of a ChatGPT plan rather than as a separate standalone product.
- Free and Go: Limited access is available through the ChatGPT desktop application for macOS and Windows.
- Plus and Pro: Expanded access is included on desktop, web, and mobile. Individual subscriptions can be purchased through ChatGPT.
- Business: Organizations can purchase per-user subscriptions, starting with two users. Additional usage credits may be available beyond included plan capacity.
- Enterprise and Edu: Access is obtained through an organizational agreement. Enterprise and education buyers contact OpenAI sales, and workspace administrators can control availability through roles and workspace settings.
Availability may depend on the account rollout, plan limits, device, region, and organizational controls.
Product Legacy and Former Names
ChatGPT Work is the current successor to several earlier OpenAI agent products and modes:
- Operator: Introduced in January 2025 as a research preview, Operator used a hosted browser to click, type, scroll, and complete web-based tasks.
- Deep Research: Introduced in February 2025 for autonomous, multi-source online research and cited analytical reports.
- ChatGPT agent: Released in July 2025, ChatGPT agent combined Operator’s browser interaction with Deep Research’s investigation and synthesis capabilities. It added a virtual computer, terminal access, connectors, APIs, and recurring tasks. The standalone Operator site was subsequently retired.
- ChatGPT Work: Introduced in July 2026 as the successor for longer, multi-step assignments and finished deliverables. The product expanded the earlier agent model into documents, spreadsheets, presentations, Sites, desktop applications, team context, and cross-device task continuation.
- Deep Research remains available as a dedicated research capability, while ChatGPT Work serves as the broader environment for research, action, and deliverable creation.
