It is being used by the whole department. The main business problem it addresses is Wi-Fi 6 compatibility.
  • Improved GUI
  • Support traditional Catalyst CLI commands
  • Ease of Deployment
  • Wi-Fi 6 Support
  • Support for traditional settings.
  • More documentation and guides.
  • Legacy model support.
For large-scale and state-of-the-art deployments. Not suited for small-scale deployments.
Yes having the same IP phone from Cisco makes it easy for deployment and compatibility.
Yes, compared to traditional controllers the new 9800 controllers provide a wide range of options and policies you can create for specific AP's as well as SSID's. It gives a wider range of policy to be mapped to multiple AP's making security policy management easier without the need for NAC.

It is deployed in two ways. One is central controller where all APs connect to the 9800 cl in a flex connect mode and the other option is to use 9800-80 in a onsite local connect mode, both of which have worked very well. Easy to deploy, and configure the controller.
  • Download csv of all APs on the controller.
  • Monitor traffic.
  • Send commands to the AP from the controller.
  • Flash the led on AP. It still doesn't have it in 16.x.
I have used this controller for about 3-4 years and I have been impressed by how each IOS XE version has evolved and the support of new features have been introduced. WLC on 9800 is well suited for a large enterprise or central controller where remote APs join the controller in flex connect mode.
I was successfully able to run the 9800-CL on top of the 9300 catalyst switch. It was a little difficult to make it work at first, but I was able to set it up. For a location or a site that does not need a local controller, the switch can be turned into multiple function device. SW and WLC.
Policy engine is handled by ISE. Supports a thousand policy profiles and more than 5000 policy tags.
With just a click the network automatically upgrades to the newest software. All the AP's receive the new software that is pushed via the active 9800 controller. All the policies are pushed down to the AP's with click of a few buttons.
