What is Devin?

Devin is an autonomous software engineering platform from Cognition that can plan, write, run, test, and review code for engineering teams. The current product includes cloud-based agent workflows and Devin Desktop, which Cognition describes as the new name for Windsurf and positions as an IDE for managing local and cloud agents from one editor surface.

Key Capabilities

Autonomous software tasks: Devin can handle engineering work such as Linear and Jira tickets, new feature implementation, bug reproduction and fixing, internal tool development, code migrations, refactors, and repetitive engineering tasks.
Multi-agent execution: Devin can delegate large tasks to multiple parallel agents, including multi-repo and multi-week projects, and can improve over time by reading prior session trajectories and team knowledge.

Code review: Devin Review is available for GitHub pull requests, including GitHub Enterprise Server and Enterprise Cloud, and is designed to review and explain complex pull requests. Recent product updates also add security review behavior to pull request review workflows.

Technical Specifications

Deployment and security: Devin Enterprise offers deployment in a customer-controlled VPC, states that customer data is not used for training, and includes SOC 2 Type 2, audit logs, fine-grained access controls, and custom identity provider integration.
Desktop product transition: Cognition’s current product messaging states that Windsurf is now Devin Desktop.

Ownership transition: Windsurf announced in July 2025 that it was being acquired by Cognition and that Windsurf technology would be integrated into the broader Devin product line.
