What is Dremio?

Dremio is a data lakehouse platform that became part of SAP when SAP completed its acquisition of Dremio in July 2026. The platform is positioned within SAP’s data portfolio to help organizations combine SAP and non-SAP data for analytics and AI workloads.

Dremio is built around Apache Iceberg and uses open data formats, Apache Arrow-based query processing, and an Apache Polaris-powered catalog. It can query structured, semi-structured, and unstructured data across connected sources, including through federated queries that do not require copying data into a separate system. The platform also provides automated Iceberg table maintenance, including clustering, compaction, vacuuming, and optimization.

Dremio includes an AI Semantic Layer for defining governed metrics, business terms, relationships, and access rules for downstream users and AI agents. Its query engine uses Autonomous Reflections to observe query patterns and create accelerations for recurring workloads. Dremio supports role-based and fine-grained access controls, with user identity and credentials passed to connected data sources.

For AI workflows, Dremio provides a built-in AI agent, an MCP integration for tools such as Claude, ChatGPT, and Gemini, and a command-line interface for coding agents. These capabilities let AI tools query governed data while inheriting the requesting user’s access permissions.

Dremio is available as a fully managed cloud service and as self-managed enterprise software for Kubernetes, on-premises, and cloud deployments. It is intended for data engineering, analytics, and AI teams building open, Iceberg-based data platforms.
