What is Enterprise Vault?
Enterprise Vault is an enterprise archiving, compliance, and governance product that captures email, collaboration messages, files, and other business communications, stores them in an archive, and supports retention, search, and eDiscovery. It is offered as a business unit of Cloud Software Group, and its current offering, Enterprise Vault Complete, bundles archiving, eDiscovery, surveillance, data insight, and capture under a single subscription.
Audience
Legal and eDiscovery teams, compliance and risk teams, IT teams, and records and information governance teams. The vendor names financial services, healthcare, government, and energy as regulated industries it serves.
Key Capabilities
- Archiving: Archives files and mailboxes to reduce primary storage. The vendor states that it stores billions of records.
- Capture (formerly Merge1): Collects content from the vendor's stated 130 or more sources, including Microsoft Teams chat and channels, Slack, Zoom, Webex, SMS and MMS, WhatsApp, WeChat, and social media. It supports journaling and mailbox archiving for Exchange, where journaling keeps a real-time copy of email communications.
- Classification: Rule-based tagging that the vendor says identifies personal data, payment card data, and intellectual property on ingestion, and that can drive retention and storage placement, such as write-once storage on premises or in the cloud.
- eDiscovery: Discovery Accelerator, also called eDiscovery, works on archived content. It creates cases and review sets, assigns reviewers and queues, provides tagging, coding, and annotation, keeps audit logs, and exports tagged content. It does not collect new data. An eDiscovery Platform offers search, legal hold, and collection tools.
- Surveillance: The vendor says it supports review of communications for FINRA, SEC, and FCA requirements, with sampling. I did not read the product page.
- Data Insight: Analyzes file system activity and access patterns.
- Regulatory support: The vendor states that Enterprise Vault supports retention and supervision requirements aligned with SEC 17a-4, FINRA supervision rules, and MiFID II. This is not a certification.
Technical Specifications
- Deployment: The product pages describe an on-premises architecture within the customer's infrastructure or private cloud. The homepage says the product deploys in a data center, on AWS or Azure, or as managed software as a service. These statements conflict, and I could not check them against documentation.
- Versions: The license index lists 15.2 as current, with 15.1, 15.0, and the 14.x releases archived. Other component versions are Data Insight 7.1, eDiscovery Platform 10.3, and Merge1 7.0.2411.
- Licensing: Complete is one subscription covering the components. I found no prices.
Name Change and Ownership History
Enterprise Vault began as a product of VERITAS Software around 2004. Symantec acquired VERITAS in 2005, and the Carlyle Group bought Veritas from Symantec in 2016, so Enterprise Vault became a Veritas Technologies product. Cohesity then bought Veritas's enterprise data protection business, reported as closing in December 2024, and the assets that remained, including Enterprise Vault, became the company Arctera. Cloud Software Group announced in August 2025 that it would acquire Arctera, and it is reported to have completed the acquisition by December 2025, although the sources disagree on the exact date. On May 6, 2026, Cloud Software Group launched Enterprise Vault as a standalone business unit led by Soniya Bopache, and on May 13, 2026, it launched Enterprise Vault Complete. The vendor states that the launch does not disrupt current deployments, support, or roadmaps. The vendor's site still carries the Arctera name in its legal pages and copyright line. The Merge1 product is now Enterprise Vault Capture. Documentation, listings, and reviews under the names Veritas Enterprise Vault, Symantec Enterprise Vault, Arctera Enterprise Vault, and Merge1 describe this product or its predecessors.
