What is Firefox Reality?

Firefox Reality is a solution designed to help users browse in virtual or mixed reality, with solutions for Viveport, Oculus, Pico, or Hololens. It is an open source solution. It is presented as a browser to bring add-on support to the immersive web. The user can download extensions that help take control of the VR browsing experience, such as uBlock, Dark Reader, and Privacy Badger. The browser can also do the work of remembering and entering passwords and other frequent form text with our autofill feature.

Categories & Use Cases

A safe and fast VR browser for the university context.

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

I use Firefox Reality in selected seminars with up to 30 students as a fast and secure browser for virtual reality headsets. In particular, the ability to seamlessly switch between 2D and 3D to think of diverse content solves a key problem I was facing before. The high speed and security have also made a lasting impression on me.

Pros

  • Switch between 2D and 3D content.
  • secure and fast browser for 3D content.
  • Private Modus.
  • Full screen and focus mode, cinema mode.

Cons

  • Speech recognition for voice control.
  • Regular updates with new functions.
  • Immediate security updates when security vulnerabilities become known.

Return on Investment

  • Students engagement with VR-Technology.
  • Low-threshold interaction with technology.
  • Independent testing of the application in teaching-learning contexts.
