We are using FoxPro for few customers. There are still many businesses that are using VFP although Microsoft stopped supporting it years ago. Many legacy applications, particularly BFSI, Healthcare, Real Estate, are running on Visual FoxPro. These software applications and products are being used by hundreds of businesses, that are now so much hooked to VFP, that they do not want to switch to newer technologies. As a result, there are a wide range of companies across market segments that need constant support to their VFP products. We at Apptread (an ImpactQA company) have helped several customers in maintaining their legacy applications on FoxPro. So much so that we even automated the regression suite making rolling out new features, easy. There are not too many developers today that are willing to work on VFP but there are still a bunch of companies that are keeping the VFP developers engaged. Some customers have started moving their VFP applications to .NET but that would also need an understanding of VFP code. As a result folks with good VFP and .NET experience are most sought after programmers. VFP has many advantages over other new age tech. Looks like VFP may not have a great future but it is certainly here to stay for few more years. It would be too early to write it off.
  • Structured language easy access to database.
  • Access to VFP programmers.
  • 3rd party plugins and wizards available that help in application development.
  • Moving to iOS and Android is not possible.
  • Support from Microsoft.
Legacy applications already on VFP are a good candidate. If you plan to move to iOS and Android apps, VFP is not for you. Also, in future access to VFP programmers may be limited. You could use VFP as a powerful database tool. I know of many programmers who love to exploit the features of VFP to create easy to use applications.
  • We were able to provide VFP services to several customers.
  • It’s a technology that is still being used by many Fortune 1000 and 500 companies hence we see a good ROI.
We use VFP because our customers are on VFP.
There are several easy to use and powerful features of VFP that programmers like.
Although MS has discontinued support of VFP there is a good community of programmers that are available for help. In fact we have several programmers at Apptread that are skilled not only in VFP but also .NET so that if there is a need to migrate some parts of applications to .NET , it is easy for us to do that.

FoxPro is used to develop a plug-in for our stock management software.
  • Treat data from files
  • Reporting
  • error handling
  • User interface
FoxPro is good for data manipulation from files.
It is easy to generate/design reports of those data.

  • We are using FoxPro because that is the only way to add custom plugins in the software we use to manage our stock.
  • So, FoxPro is suitable for this need.
  • We are developing software in c# .NET, compared to this, FoxPro is clearly out-dated.
  • borland c++ builder, c# .net, c++ and Visual Studio
We are only using FoxPro because it is the only way to add custom plugins into the software we use to manage our stock. FoxPro is a semi-oriented object language and should clearly not be compared with recent technologies.
  • Files manipulation
  • Create reports
  • Pass data to one form to another
  • Error handling
No
FoxPro could be used for systems which don't require the latest technologies.

We use FoxPro to support Sage Pro customers, Accountmate customers, and customers who have custom foxpro applications either built by us or by other people. Our whole organization uses FoxPro. It serves the purpose of application development, database frontend to SQL and Access, and a report generation tool. We write, develop, maintain, and support FoxPro for businesses ranging from very small to hundreds of millions of dollars per year.
  • It is very fast to access data in SQL, Access, and other ODBC languages.
  • It has a lot of great code examples available on the web for free.
  • It has a lot of wizards to aid in application development, both from Microsoft and from third parties.
  • It is a structured language, so supportable code is fairly easy to create.
  • There are still a lot of FoxPro experts available to call on if needed.
  • Microsoft stopped selling this and stopped supporting it in 2014. It still works on Windows 10, but if you have a problem, you are on your own.
  • The look and feel of screens and displayed text is getting a little dated.
  • It's really designed for desktop/server environments rather than the cloud.
It's well suited to support existing applications and not very well suited to develop new applications especially those that would reside in the cloud. It is possible to have Foxpro frontends to Oracle, SQL, MySQL, and other databases, but it is not possible to run FoxPro apps on an Android or an iPhone.
  • Positive impact is that the value of FoxPro applications has continued to increase over the years, so we are in high demand for our services.
  • Negative impact is that sometimes you have difficult to support scenarios where you might have to spend many hours to just keep something functional.
  • A negative impact is that this language is taught in very few places, either in schools, or private learning centers.
  • FoxPro beats Access in several ways. It is generally faster and leads to more supportable code.
  • FoxPro loses to the programming language C in speed and flexibility. You can run C on almost any platform out there.
  • FoxPro has better report writing and screen development tools than out of the box MS SQL.
  • Java beats Foxpro for web application development and platform flexibility.
