GFI LanGuard has been a reliable and valuable tool for users over the past 6+ years, providing excellent service support. Many users have found that the software helps them save a significant amount of time in patching and maintaining large server estates, allowing them to be more productive with other tasks. With its network scanning capabilities, GFI LanGuard is widely used for vulnerability analysis and timely patch management, ensuring a secure network at the workplace. By efficiently managing time and ensuring computers are properly patched, it safeguards the network and protects connected computers and shared folders. Additionally, users utilize GFI LanGuard for deploying software patches and managing third-party software installations.

Although GFI LanGuard initially lacked accurate reporting capabilities, users have found it to be effective in patch management and saving man-hours in patching machines across the network. The tool's primary function is to patch Microsoft and other third-party tools, but there is room for improvement in terms of reporting features. However, GFI LanGuard is highly regarded for its ease of use, user-friendly interface, automation and scheduling capabilities, as well as auto remediation options. Acting as a scanner, it effectively detects vulnerabilities related to software issues and misconfigurations.

In the IT department, GFI LanGuard is widely used to assess network vulnerability and identify machines that require patching in order to enhance security. It also enables pushing updates to machines automatically or manual updating in case of failed pushes. Overall, users have had positive experiences with GFI LanGuard, appreciating its time-saving features and ability to ensure network security through efficient patch management.

Automation and Monitoring Capabilities: Users have appreciated the automation and monitoring capabilities of GFI Languard, allowing for easy management of clients and devices. Several reviewers have mentioned how these features have simplified their patching process.

Vulnerability Scanning and Patch Management: Many users consider the vulnerability scanning and patch management features of GFI Languard to be essential tools. They highlight the software's fast and accurate scanning, comprehensive vulnerability list, and easy installation and configuration. This has helped them effectively identify vulnerabilities in their network.

Flexibility in Organizing Computers and Setting Customized Schedules: The flexibility offered by GFI Languard in terms of organizing computers into different groups and setting up customized scan and patching schedules has been highly valued by users. It allows them to efficiently manage updates based on specific requirements for different groups within their network.

Limitation on number of ports and service dependencies: Several users have suggested removing the limitation on the number of ports and service dependencies in the product. They feel that this restriction hampers their ability to fully utilize the software and limits its effectiveness for managing complex systems.

Outdated interface lacking visual aspects: Users have found the interface of the product to be outdated and lacking visual aspects for easier navigation and understanding. This has made it difficult for them to quickly find the information they need, resulting in a less efficient workflow.

Service requires frequent server restarts: Some users have experienced problems with the service unless the server is frequently restarted. This issue has caused frustration as it disrupts their work and adds unnecessary maintenance tasks.

It is used by the IT Department in order to give an indication of how vulnerable or "safe" the network is based on the number of existing vulnerabilities that need patching. It is then used to identify which machines are vulnerable and the patches required in order to make that machine safe. We also use it to push updates to all machines where possible and in the event, a push fails, it can be identified and that machine can be manually updated.
  • Install an agent to thoroughly scan machines to discover vulnerabilities.
  • Keeps there lists up-to-date with applications outside of windows and lets you know when an update is available.
Cons
  • It could be a bit of information overload which some things are shown can become noise. Maybe different levels of "security" for lack of a better term may be better where you have a summary vs detailed level when it comes to rating the vulnerability of the entire network.
  • I find I sometimes have issues with PCs on a different network accessed across a VPN where timeouts often occur with very large updates. This aspect can be improved.
-To track the vulnerability level of a windows network.
-To push windows and other application updates from a central location.
-Produce reports to highlight work being done to protect a network. In some organizations, you may have to prove for audit reasons you are enforcing policies put into place around cyber-security. This software can help you track work done on an ongoing basis for such purposes.
  • Certainty. It allows you to know where on your network needs attention.
  • Peace of mind. As security professionals, we can only put the necessary things in place to prevent malicious persons from exploiting a network. The software allows you to know whether or not your risk of exploitation is high or low. and if high what to do with it.
WSUS was the other alternative I considered but I believe GFI takes updates, reporting, and functionality to a different level for an enterprise/medium-size business environment.
I only tried to access there support once and it was a relatively pain-free process. They also have a lot of documentation available online which can be used to learn and tailor the software to suit your needs. It just takes time and effort to plan, execute and monitor going forward.
