Brilliant Virtualization OS for storage solutions

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

In our testing fleet we use Hitachi Storage Virtualization Operating System (SVOS) in all our storage compute machines to have reliable and stable OS for storage technologies. Our requirement is to have fast, reliable and stable storage solution for testing frameworks and Hitachi Storage Virtualization Operating System (SVOS) provides that. Scope of our use case is for internal testing infrastructure we want a high performant resilient storage solution

Pros

  • Stable OS
  • Fast performance with no overhead in virtualized environment
  • Live migration is very easy and reliable

Cons

  • Cost is too high
  • Documentation quality needs to be improved a lot. It is missing details currenty
  • Organize all the documents and tools related info in easy to read and understand manner

Return on Investment

  • Cost had bit of negative impact
  • Due to stable OS and live migrations support it has allowed us to dynamically tune the capacity of our test clusters leading to better COGS for our business

Storage Virtulization Delivered At Its Best

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We have been having multiple storage solutions, however they are old and was not in a position to get supoprt from the vendors as they were too old. We were looking for an option to virtulize our sotrage enviroment so that we can leverage the old storage appliances for DEV / TEST environments. Hitachi SVOS was the solution which provided us with the required feature set.
PS :- Hitachi drives are really reliable not many users know this.

Pros

  • Intergreation of legancy storage solutions
  • Single pane for future storage configurations
  • Amazing replication capability for disaster recovery purposes

Cons

  • Ease of use can be increased so that SMB segment could leverage without the need of having a storage administrator
  • Firmware upgrade for the legancy storage device from HSVOS pane

Most Important Features

  • Virtulization of the storage environment
  • Increased performance in database servers
  • Disaster Recovery replication boost

Return on Investment

  • It is quite an expensive solution compared to other vendors so we cant expect a ROI within 3 years time as always.
  • 3 years has been a standard ROI review, however storage solution like Hitachi SVOS are meant to lasts for a longer period like 6 years in my consideration.
  • However, this solution provides a great benefit to make use of legacy appliances.
