We use IBM Concert to monitor and report on our IBM Power estate and enable us to have a single pane of glass or morning cup of coffee view of the state of our environment. I also love that it can not only report metrics and compliance issues but you can also remediate problems and perform upgrades straight out of Concert.

How I used IBM Concert toRedefine Cybersecurity Issue Fixes

I work as a software developer, and the application I develop is vetted with IBM Concert to find security issues like CVEs, vulnerable jars, and automatic solution suggestions for the highlighted issues as well. There is a separate application security team in my company that mainly uses the IBM Concert application and helps us configure it on different applications. Once the configuration is complete, any new enhancements I make are analysed with the IBM Concert tool to find security issues and patch them before releasing the software for our users.

Pros

  • It helps find out security vulnerabilities and address them in short time.
  • We also use it mainly to track if our application meets various compliance and standards that are set by our organization.
  • Our production support team mainly use it as a dashboard to monitor various different applications altogether in a same view where it shows many different metrics like the application health, open security issues, memory usage, certificate renewal timelines etc and this helps them notify the development team about any priority things to be done in order for the application to maintain the organization standards.

Cons

  • Currently I think there is no provision to simulate things like "What happens if this database goes down?". So I think IBM should try to add some section where they can allow the users to simulate things on a particular application to see or understand the behaviour without really making any changes.
  • I also need some feature that analyses the application real time usage and suggest if the allocated memory is more than needed and it can be reduced so that our overall cost to host that application gets reduced. Feature like this is really useful for company like us to save more cost.
  • Enhancing the current Software Composition Analysis (SCA) to not only show if a library has a CVE, but also its "health" metrics, such as how often the library is updated, the number of active maintainers, and if it is at risk of being abandoned.

Return on Investment

  • The overall time it saves for each of our development team member is huge in a way that we are able to use the extra time to focus on future planned tasks.
  • On the same note, this auto vulnerability fix suggestion is so good that it makes us lazy not to explore other possible solutions and makes us depend more on the IBM Concert tool.
  • Few developers have reported a steep learning curve and find the interface complex. So we had to maintain training materials for new joinees to go through and understand on how to use this tool.
  • With recent AI evolution, the suggestions are getting way better than before and it even makes us complete the work in few minutes.
