Creating a Word Template for use with Invantive Composition

This video teaches you how to create a Word Template for use with Invantive Composition. With Invantive Composition for Word you will have a complete solution for the automatic generation of complex documents that meets the law and regulations. Invantive Composition allows you to easily retrieve information from your database and process it in Microsoft Word. This way, Invantive Composition makes it easy for you to automatically fill in previously created templates with data from your database. For you this means that you can merge data from your enterprise systems such as: legal pleadings, project budgets, serial letters, employment contracts, insurance policies, license contracts, prices and other structured data into a personal document. The advantage of this is that with Invantive Composition you can manage and dynamically create documents from the Document Management System. Using Invantive Composition to create demanding Microsoft Word documents you can reduce your costs and avoid future damage. We're going to use data from an existing database to put into a Word template. We'll use a pre-defined description of your data in your database, application, or web service. Finished documents can be archived directly from within Microsoft Word to any Document Management System. Now, I'm going to build a real template to merge data into Microsoft Word. To build a real template you'll need to use the ribbon "Modeler". It's to the right of the Invantive Composition ribbon. This model describes a data model with questions and answers for students. A template of Invantive Composition contains a number of instructions which are XML-like constructs in your Word document. You can enter it by hand. But the easy way to do it, is to use "Building Blocks". The "Building Blocks" are based upon the definitions in your model and are located right here. Let us define a list of questions. That requires a "repeating block" of questions. I insert that at the top of the document. As you can see, two instructions are inserted into the Word document. There is an instruction for the start and end of the repeating block. All content between those two instructions is repeated for every row that meets the criteria of the associated database or web service query. OK. Now we want to insert the actual question. The easiest way again is to use the "Building Blocks" button to insert the question. This is a list of predefined fields. You can just select the current value of the question. But you can also insert all kinds of variants by just selecting them. OK. The Word document now contains an "Expression". It tells the Invantive Composition to insert here the value of the field "Question". The "Expression" can also contain plain text. For example: "Question is". But I'm going to remove this element. Publishing a Word template with Invantive Composition

n this video I’ll show you how an end user can publish a predefined template that he or she has access to. That can be through a Document Management System, a file system, a web service or a database. You’ll also learn how to control the user interface of Invantive Composition as an end user. I’ve saved a small Invantive composition template, called ‘’Student questions’’. When Word starts , you can see that an add-in is loaded. It’s called ‘’Invantive Composition for Word’’. A ‘’Log on’’ window will pop up when Word finishes loading. Invantive Composition detects that this is a template to use with Invantive Composition. It probably will need a database or web service connection. For this example, I’ll use a connection called ‘’Demo MySQL’’. And this connection is located in the cloud. It is accessible through Invantive Web Service. You can use it for your own samples, testing and evaluation of Invantive Composition. But you can also of course choose to use your own local database, such as Oracle, DB2, SQL Server, MySQL or a web service. The only thing that has changed is the ribbons. There is a ribbon, called “Invantive Composition’’. And there is ‘’Modeler’’. Today we will only need the ‘’Invantive Composition’’ ribbon. There are new buttons; one is the ‘’Publish’’ button. Publishing merges the template data from a database or web service and creates a new Word document. The ‘’Import Document‘’ button lets you extract the values from filled-out forms in Microsoft Word and load them into a database. Next to the ‘’Publish’’ and ‘’Import Document’’ buttons, there is some informative about the template. The next button lets you access ‘’Instructions’’ that come with this template. The ‘’Satellite’’ icon tells me that we are connected through a web service. Using ‘’Preferences’’ you can change things like the user interface language. By clicking the ‘’Publish’’ button Invantive Composition detects that this template has three parameters which you’ll need to fill out, they are al required. When you did that click ‘’OK’’, and Invantive Composition start combining data from your data source with the template into a Word document. The result of this document is a little booklet for educational purposes. This booklet includes information which has been filled out during the publication process, and you can see that there are different types of questions with different pictures, dependent on the properties of the questions in the database. This is the question that the student should answer. You can also see in ‘’File’’ and then ‘’Properties’’, that some custom document properties have been defined. In this case I have chosen to include a parameter value in the document properties. This registration of properties is very useful when archiving your published documents to a DMS, like SharePoint. This is the publishing part of a document. You might use Invantive Composition together with the Document Management System. If you do you'll see buttons for archiving documents into the DMS and ''Open Templates'', to the left of the ''Publish'' button. The list of supported platforms can be extended using your own providers. But that's something for another video.
