What is Kilt?

KILT Protocol is a decentralized blockchain identity protocol for issuing self-sovereign, anonymous and verifiable credentials. The protocol supports business models around identity, addressing the need for reliable and verifiable identity solutions in the digital world. KILT brings the traditional process of trust in real-world credentials (passport, driving license, certificates, etc.) to the digital world, representing identity while keeping data private and in the possession of its owner.

KILT allows users to claim multiple attributes about themselves, have them attested by trusted entities, and store these claims as self-sovereign digital credentials that can be shown to others when needed. The data remains with its owner, with only a hash of the credential stored on the blockchain.

For enterprises and entrepreneurs, KILT created an open-source software development kit (SDK) for building applications to create credentials and offer a service issuing and verifying credentials. This is built using JavaScript, so it requires no previous blockchain experience.

KILT also powers Social KYC, a decentralized identity verification service that aims to allow users to regain control over their digital identity. For example, SocialKYC verifies an identity by proving the user has control of their social accounts (LinkedIn, Twitter, TikTok, Discord, Github, etc.) as well as their email address, phone number, etc. Unlike Web 2.0 sign-in processes, SocialKYC forgets about the user and the credential as soon as the credential is issued. Personal data is not stored, siloed or shared. SocialKYC will enable users to select which elements of their private information are accessed by online services.

The KILT SDK is available free under a BSD license for building applications with the KILT Protocol.
