Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We use NetApp ONTAP Data Management Software to manage our VMware datastores, CIFS Servers, and iSCSI-connected LUNs on our SQL Servers. We also use OnTAP as a key component of our disaster recovery plan.

Pros

Consistent performance improvements with each release
Consistent storage efficiency improvements with each release
Easy to manage replication / disaster recovery solution

Cons

Ever since GUI updates made several years ago, there is reduced functionality in some areas
Automation could be made easier

If you have a lot of VMs, NetApp ONTAP Data Management Software is amazing as far as both performance and the amount of efficiency savings. No one has complained about performance in over a decade. 5TB volumes frequently hold over 5TB of content. CIFS Server restore capabilities are integrated and fairly intuitive. SQL backups that use iSCSI connected LUNs is very effective.

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We use 2 NetApp storage arrays at two different locations,

that are synchronised in case of power or network failure at one location, we

use Snap mirror to that provides asynchronous data replication between our two

locations.

The feature set on the hardware and Ontap OS provides the

tools and features to make sure our IT infrastructures upside is as close as

possible to 100%.

Feature rich Cli but some features are missing from the UI
Lack of tools in UI compared to CLI
SnapMirror management from UI can be temperamental and as in previous points CLI is better.

Likelihood to Recommend

NetApp solutions are flash only, the cost is higher than say

a hybrid storage solution and you get lower raw storage than say mechanical hard

drives.

The performance of an all-flash setup far exceeds standard

hardware and the ONTAP operating system pairs perfectly.

For our use case we picked NetApp due to the Security and compliance

features as we are in the public sector it’s an important area for us.

We need a storage solution that worked out of the box with VMware

the integration is easy and even has vvol support for VMware

The disaster recovery solutions built into ONTAP meet the

requirements of the features we were lacking with our previous solution.

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

NetApp ONTAP Data Management Software helps our team to monitor data flow from our customers and plan on how we can offer the best services. It also provides data storage services that can securely sustain large workloads. Since we deployed this product there is no case of any cyber attacks since it has strong security layer that cannot be easily compromised.

Cons

I have not experienced any area that requires improvements.
There is no missing functionality.

I have highly benefited from the performance of this great tool. Storage and data management programs have been running as planned since we deployed this system. Under NetApp ONTAP Data Management Software our data and customers contacts are always secure. It has helped our company in reducing storage costs as we can safely use cloud storage services. It gives us continuity guarantee even after our systems fail to function due to strong backup system.

This highly functional and flexible data management system is among the easiest platform to implement and the features adjustment for the provision of quick services is an easy process. NetApp ONTAP Data Management features are very effective and powerful tools that allow the user to import a huge amount of different data sizes and also creating reports is also an easy operation for the user.

The training provided can be advanced.

It is used as the operational center of our data storage system. It organizes our data and stores it in different folders according to our preferences. It has a powerful security layer that provides security to our stored workloads throughout. It has an advanced system that promotes faster transfer of files from one user to the other. Data access from this product is easy from anywhere, provided the user has all log-in details.

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We use NetApp as our primary file system for our Windows shares / mapped drives, as well as for NFS storage for our virtualization environment. We have multiple filers across various sites. We utilize several features including snapshot and snapmirror. It is used across our whole organization at multiple locations.

Pros

Offsite replication is seamless.
Snapshots are easy to implement.
System Manager is easy to learn and manage the entire system.
System Manager is feature rich.

Cons

More details on network interfaces are available in CLI. Would like to see similar visibility on the GUI.
Deleting volumes that have been snapmirrored have to be released at the snapmirror destination first. Would be nice to have that feature at the source where you are deleting the volume.
When creating a volume in the GUI it adds to the default junction point. Would be nice to choose the junction point as you were creating the volume (this is a feature available in the CLI).

Likelihood to Recommend

ONTAP System Manager is feature rich and all inclusive. It can work with multiple storage protocols and for various functionalities. It will replace your File Servers and your SAN and put them into one storage appliance. NFS, iSCSI, Fibre Channel, NVMe are all options. Snapshots and Offsite replication (Snapmirror) are all great. I can't think of a scenario where a NetApp wouldn't be a good fit.

NetApp System Manager: A System Manager Made for Managers

NetApp ONTAP System Manager is used within our organization to manage our NetApp filers through a web interface. NetApp ONTAP System Manager is a very easy and intuitive GUI for managing your SVMs, volumes, shares, etc. We use it to make the typical day to day changes but it can also be used to change networking configurations, "rehome interfaces," check diagnostics, and set up SnapMirror relationships.

Pros

System Manager is extremely good at resizing volumes, changing snapshot policies and making day-to-day changes.
The Dashboard and the Hardware and Diagnostics tabs are a great window into the health of your filer and Cluster. You can immediately see any issues like volumes that are nearly full or errors in the event logs.

Cons

Like any "single pane of glass" GUI implementation, there are always settings and configurations you can't include.
System Manager cannot make specific/complex configuration changes. For example I had to log in to make changes to "fpolicies" and the users associated with them.

Likelihood to Recommend

NetApp ONTAP System Manager is a must-have for anyone that uses a current NetApp installation. In the past I always preferred to use the command line interface. I never really trusted GUIs to make sweeping changes. I always assumed something would go wrong. I've been using System Manager only for several years now (with the exception of the few settings omitted) and I have had absolutely no issues. In my case this has also been key for my coworkers who are not as familiar with NetApp products. While they don't know the CLI syntax they can easily figure out the System Manager interface.

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

As a company using a third party to manage our SAN, OnCommand is very necessary to give use even read-only access to what our SAN looks like and to allow us the insights we need for our capacity management and projections.

Pros

Fairly intuitive UI that just gets better with each update. In particular the logical breakdown of clustered nodes and their SVMs.
Some of the help items and tips etc really help when drilling it to items that you dont use so often.
Have a powershell API has been a major bonus for our organization as while the UI is great for day to day tasks, the ability to extract data to feed in to other reporting platforms make it mo much richer as a product.

Cons

Not necessarily a dislike of OnCommand per se but I do dislike that you have to still use different flavors of this tool to get a holistic view of every aspect of your NetApp - System Manager, Performance Manager, Unified Manager etc
The initial process to connect to a filer probably could do with a little more friendly documentation as the format for filer name (or IP) and whether and SNMP string is required etc is not clear.
The ability for more complete search capability within the logs (so therefore not having to extract them to work with them) would be an advantage for the timely resolution of faults.

Likelihood to Recommend

I feel like this tool is well suited where you have a relatively small footprint in terms of NetApp devices so they can be easily managed via this tool. I would say that anything over maybe 4 filers and tools like Performance Manager and System Manager come in to their own a little more.
