What is Oracle Big Data Cloud Service?

Oracle Big Data Cloud Service, now presented on Oracle Cloud Infrastructure as Oracle Big Data Service, is a managed Hadoop platform for building and operating data lakes and large-scale analytics workloads. It provisions dedicated Hadoop and Spark clusters on demand, with options ranging from small virtual-machine deployments to larger bare-metal environments. Clusters can be scaled up or down as compute and storage requirements change.

The current service is based on Oracle Distribution including Apache Hadoop (ODH), which includes Apache Hadoop, HBase, Hive, Spark, Ambari, and related big data services. It supports HDFS-based processing, high-availability clusters, Oracle Cloud Infrastructure identity, networking, storage, monitoring, and a REST API for cluster administration. Oracle Cloud SQL is available as an add-on for running Oracle SQL queries across HDFS, Kafka, OCI Object Storage, and other supported data stores with distributed query pushdown.

Oracle Big Data Service also integrates with Oracle data integration, data science, and analytics services. Its included notebook environment supports R, Python, and SQL workflows, while Oracle Machine Learning for SparkR supports parallel R-based data preparation and model development on cluster resources. Typical use cases include cloud data lakes, Hadoop migration, large-scale transformation and analysis, and machine learning development against Hadoop data.

The service remains active. Oracle’s Cloudera Distribution Including Apache Hadoop (CDH) option is the legacy component: after January 31, 2023, customers could no longer create new Big Data Service CDH clusters or expand a tenancy’s CDH capacity beyond its established limit. Oracle states that this restriction does not affect support for existing CDH clusters. New deployments use Oracle Distribution including Apache Hadoop (ODH), which Oracle continues to update and support.
