Petrel is used only by my research group within the Department of Earth Sciences at the university. There are currently three users of Petrel. We use it to map various geologic horizons from well tops obtained through third-party software, perform basic petrophysical analyses and prepare surfaces for basin modeling in Petromod.
  • Petrel handles multiple coordinate systems better than competitors.
  • The object tree organization in Petrel is intuitive and user-friendly.
  • Easy to handle data across multiple UTM zones by allowing geodesic coordinates.
Petrel is very well suited if working with a few wells and using as part of a workflow which includes another Schlumberger application, such as Petromod. It is also the most viable option if working with datasets extending across multiple UTM zones. It has a steep learning curve for occasional users who just want to manipulate surfaces.
  • It allowed us to handle datasets across the entire basin.
I use Petrel and competitor products for different functions. If I didn't have Petrel, it would be a lot more difficult to work with my aerially extensive dataset and manipulate my data with geographic coordinates.

Petrel is used in our geology and geophysics department. I currently don't use it in the company I work for, however, I used it several times in the Institute for Reservoir Characterization at OU and also in Attribute Assisted Seismic Processing and Interpretation, and in those times it was the most used geologic modelling tool, it helped us in every seismic exploration project we were working on.
  • Petrel is a complete tool, it can help with almost all of the areas needed for oil exploration. From well log interpretation to seismic processing and interpretation.
  • The mathematics involved in all the simulation processes is really accurate so the geological models are extremely detailed, which allows us to grow apart from the usual layer cake stratigraphic models.
  • Once you get the hang of the program, it is really intuitive, and all the workflows are easy to handle.
Petrel is an extremely powerful tool and for geological 3D modeling is the go-to tool, it's Sequential Indicator Simulations, Object-Based modeling or multiple point statistics modeling workflows are top notches and I highly advise its use. I wouldn't recommend using it for seismic interpretation based on seismic attributes since it can be a little bit limited in this aspect.
  • Working at the University of Oklahoma the investment is well paid since geoscientist are formed with the best tool available.
  • Keeping in mind that the software is really expensive, for the product to have an economic positive impact the project's revenue has to be large.
