Plakar
What is Plakar?
Plakar is an open-source backup and recovery platform for protecting data, applications, virtual machines, databases, and Kubernetes workloads. It creates encrypted snapshots, stores them on infrastructure selected by the organization, and provides restore workflows for recovering data after deletion, corruption, or infrastructure failure.
Key Capabilities
- Backup and Recovery: Protects cloud, on-premises, virtual-machine, container, database, and object-storage workloads through snapshots and restore operations.
- Encrypted, Immutable Storage: Encrypts backup data before storage. When paired with supported object-lock storage, Plakar can retain immutable backup copies that cannot be altered or deleted during the configured retention period.
- Deduplication and Compression: Identifies repeated data blocks and compresses backup content before transfer or storage to reduce storage consumption and data-transfer volume.
- Resilience as Code: Defines backup schedules, retention periods, replication, and recovery policies through Kubernetes custom resource definitions (CRDs), Terraform, Ansible, APIs, and command-line interfaces (CLIs).
- Self-Hosted Deployment: Runs as a self-hosted binary on infrastructure controlled by the organization, including on-premises environments, private clouds, and supported public-cloud platforms.
Audience & Use Cases
- Audience: Site reliability engineers, platform engineers, infrastructure administrators, security teams, and database administrators.
- Use Case: Teams can use Plakar to standardize backup policies across hybrid infrastructure, protect databases and Kubernetes workloads, maintain encrypted recovery copies, and restore workloads after operational failures or ransomware incidents.
Technical Specifications
- Supported Workloads: PostgreSQL, MySQL and MariaDB, Kubernetes, Docker volumes, virtual machines, and S3-compatible storage.
- Storage Destinations: Local filesystems, S3-compatible object storage, and supported cloud-storage services.
- Automation Interfaces: Kubernetes Operator, API, SDK, CLI, Terraform provider, and Ansible playbooks.
