Puter
What is Puter?
Puter (Puter.js) is an open-source Application Platforms and cloud Backend-as-a-Service (BaaS) SDK developed by HeyPuter. Built as a client-side JavaScript SDK and hosted cloud environment, Puter provides developers and artificial intelligence (AI) coding agents with serverless backend capabilities—including user authentication, key-value database storage, object storage, serverless cloud workers, peer-to-peer networking, and an integrated AI Gateway—without requiring API keys, server configuration, or backend infrastructure management.
Serverless & Keyless Client-Side Architecture
Puter eliminates traditional API key management and server provisioning by embedding backend services directly into frontend applications via a single client-side JavaScript SDK (Puter.js). All API requests are authenticated and scoped directly to the signed-in user's session, incorporating client-side sandboxing, rate-limiting, anti-abuse filtering, and role-based access controls without exposing private API keys or access tokens in client source code.
Integrated Cloud Services & AI Gateway
The platform provides a suite of cloud services accessible through standardized JavaScript function calls:
- Authentication: User signup, login, and session verification scoped to individual user accounts.
- Database & Object Storage: A serverless NoSQL key-value database for application state, alongside cloud object storage for file uploads and asset management.
- Serverless Workers & Networking: On-demand cloud execution for custom backend logic, accompanied by peer-to-peer networking capabilities.
- AI Gateway: A unified API interface providing access to over 500 artificial intelligence models across major providers, including OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, and xAI.
AI-Agent Optimization & Machine-Readable Specifications
Puter is structured specifically for integration with AI coding assistants, autonomous agents, and web-based application generators (such as Claude Code, OpenAI Codex, Cursor, GitHub Copilot, and Lovable). The platform publishes machine-readable API documentation via llms.txt, allowing large language models (LLMs) to ingest the full API specification in a single context pass and generate full-stack web applications without pausing for credential generation or backend infrastructure setup.
User-Pays Infrastructure Model & Framework Compatibility
Puter introduces a user-funded infrastructure model ("User-Pays") wherein individual end-users utilize their own pre-allocated cloud resources (storage quota, database limits, and AI tokens) upon authenticating with an application. As a result, application developers incur zero infrastructure hosting costs regardless of end-user volume, with users purchasing resource top-ups directly from Puter when usage limits are exceeded. Puter.js operates alongside modern frontend frameworks and libraries, including React, Next.js, Vue.js, Angular, Svelte, and Astro.
