What is Rakuten Symphony Symcloud?

Symcloud Platform, developed by Robin.io, is a Kubernetes platform optimized for running storage and network-intensive applications. According to the vendor, this platform offers high-performance storage and application-aware data management for various use cases, including databases, big data, AI/ML, 4G/5G Core, private 5G/LTE, MEC, RAN, and more. Symcloud Platform is targeted towards Fortune 1000 enterprises and telecom operators, catering to professionals and industries in telecommunications, enterprise IT, data science, DevOps, and cloud computing.

Key Features

Cloud-Native Storage: According to the vendor, Symcloud Platform provides a high-performing storage stack for Kubernetes environments, supporting applications such as databases, big data, message queues, timeseries, and AI/ML.

Automated Deployment: The vendor claims that Symcloud Platform enables zero-touch deployment and lifecycle automation for complex applications. It facilitates rapid deployment of 4G and 5G RAN on COTS hardware within minutes, along with centralized orchestration of cell-sites and base-band units.

Bare-Metal and VM Support: Symcloud Platform serves as a common platform for running containers and virtual machines on Kubernetes. The vendor states that it ensures consistent and common lifecycle management, allowing users to run containers and virtual machines directly on bare-metal infrastructure, thus improving hardware utilization and resource sharing.

Multi-Cloud Portability: According to the vendor, Symcloud Platform offers a consistent storage and data management experience across different cloud environments. It enables easy migration and portability of applications and their data, supporting hybrid and multi-cloud deployments without vendor lock-in.

Automation and Orchestration: Symcloud Platform allows users to automate day-to-day operations and lifecycle management tasks. The vendor claims that users can centrally manage Kubernetes clusters from edge to cloud to private data centers, creating integrated and repeatable workflows for installation and lifecycle operations. The platform also provides monitoring and visualization tools for advanced operations and observability.

Method of Procedure Management: According to the vendor, Symcloud Platform automates manual operations across the entire network, triggered by real-time events or executed on-demand in batches. Users can create integrated and repeatable workflows for installation and lifecycle operations, scaling to support a large number of nodes.

FAQs

What is Rakuten Symphony Symcloud?
Symcloud from Rakuten Symphony, based on technology acquired with Robin.io by Rakuten Symphony in early 2022, is a cloud native platform that automates enterprise applications, and enables deployment and management of complex, data- and network-intensive applications with an “as-a-service” experience anywhere, on-prem or in the cloud. ROBIN brings pay-as-you-go pricing to the Red Hat Marketplace for Robin Cloud Native Storage (CNS). Robin.io installs natively on any Kubernetes distribution within minutes and creates a block and file storage solution by pooling available storage resources such as HDDs, SSDs, and cloud disks. It also automates complex storage management and data management operations on Kubernetes and provides a simple API to developers. It is also application-aware, in that it understands the scope of a stateful application on Kubernetes and wraps all relevant components — including data, metadata, and config data — into a single entity. All data management operations, such as snapshots, backups, and migration, are performed on the entire application, not just the data. This is important because many microservice applications are designed to be stateless in order to improve scalability and performance. Dynamic pricing could play an important role in the growth of storage capabilities deployed alongside more dynamic applications common with microservice and container architectures.
