Red Hat OpenShift Virtualization Review

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

I use Red Hat OpenShift Virtualization to run VM workloads alongside my containers - mixing traditional workloads and modern workloads. I work on an OpenShift product team at Dell, and maintain multiple lab environments for validation, testing, demonstration, and asset creation. None of these are large scale, or require high availability, but I do need to test as though they do.

Pros

  • Support for Infrastructure as Code
  • VM creation is amazingly fast, especially with storage snapshots
  • VM management experience has been greatly improved

Cons

  • Creating templates could be easier
  • There should be an easy way to resize VMs that are provisioned by instance type

Return on Investment

  • It enables us to be more flexible by supporting more application scenarios
  • It streamlines the process of integrating traditional and modern workloads, and gives us a consistent management layer

Usability

Alternatives Considered

Red Hat OpenShift and Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL)

[...]'s Review

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

I have worked with OpenShift for the past 2 years or so at FCB. We love it. We've only scratched the surface. Our teammates love it. Even users from the business side of the house are impressed, as things seem to process a lot faster. Of course, at first we were a bit skeptical, as it is normally the case with new products. But as always, Red Hat rocks.

Pros

  • Code reuse
  • the reducing of Hardware footprint
  • Redundancy

Cons

  • Pricing
  • More user friendly interface
  • Navigation

Return on Investment

  • Well, for starters, it reduces the amount of hardware footprint
  • The number of personnel taking care of it is less
  • And yes, maintaining security is great.

Alternatives Considered
