Multiphase and thermal review of STAR CCM capabilities.

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We use STAR CCM+ to evaluate critical performance parameters such as pressure drop, particle capture efficiency, and Dust holding capacity for automotive Air filtration systems, as well as to predict temperature, power, and torque values for Headlights, taillights, and Polymer body panels. By using STAR CCM+, we are able to evaluate the thermal performance of lighting components and ensure that the materials being used are able to withstand the critical temperature conditions that the lighting systems operate in.

Pros

  • Meshing is very easy to do in STAR CCM+
  • Post-processing results is also very intuitive, making extracting results very enjoyable and easy to use.
  • The Advanced rendering options that are available in STAR CCM+ can really help make very well-generated videos that can make the simulation easy to visualize, share with non-technical engineers, and showcase the study done.

Cons

  • Multibody meshing controls can be a bit more easy to use.
  • Geometry clean up with the 3D CAD modifier could be a bit more easy to use.
  • Would prefer a dark mode option to be added to STAR CCM+

Likelihood to Recommend

For my personal use case, I found that STAR CCM+ was extremely easy to use, learn, and set up cases for Lagrangian particle tracking cases. Each option was easily found, and parameters to fine-tune the cases were very simple to execute. I had to create a custom field function with a nested If-else loop to account for particle capture on the filter media surface. Setting this up was very easy, and the reference material provided by STAR CCM+ was helpful. Sometimes, on the older version of STAR CCM+, when visualizing the volume mesh, some cells tend to disappear; this shows up even when plotting contour plots on the same section plane. This is improved in the newer version of STAR CCM+.

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

I'm the sole user for that product, but of course, the requirements and the design comes from other teams. And then I carry out the simulation. So I carry out the task with Star-CCM+ and then I give my verdict to those teams, along with any suggestions to improve our technology and products.

Pros

  • Meshing, for instance, it's very easy to mesh, try different approaches to meshing. Traditionally that's a very difficult job, but in STAR-CCM+ it makes it very easy and very reliable. Post-processing also is very nice and in all the modeling, the physics that you can carry out and you can simulate is also very, very nice. I tried to move to the priorities that does a good job. All in all, it's a very good software.

Cons

  • Maybe a little bit on the automation side and if you want to script something, if you want to automate procedures, that happens through every simulation round that you have. That part could be a little bit cumbersome right now, depending on the operating system that you use.
  • Introducing the software on other platforms like Mac OSS.

Likelihood to Recommend

The applications that I have been using it with in terms of flow and energy and temperature distributions and coupled solvers, segregated solvers, these kind of areas if you need that, those kind of solvers, it's very good. It's very robust. Maybe on the combustion side, it could improve, especially if you have these kind of tabulated solvers that you want to use, not the detailed chemistry, then it becomes very difficult to get some results from it. And do you trust the results or not? That's always the question on that kind of application, something that I could think of really fast.

How to support the biggest in industry on technological developments

Rating: 7 out of 10

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

All flow simulations that are relevant for topics that might have direct impact on product performance. So optical column conditioning, outgassing and deposition rates, defectivity, Optics Life time, Thermal and pressure stability.

Pros

  • Multiphase Flow
  • Meshing capabilities for industrial problems
  • CAD import from NX
  • User Interface
  • Postprocessing & visualization

Cons

  • Implementing physics like Cox-Voinov model
  • Mesh related stability issues
  • Chemical & plasma physics
  • Integration with other products from Siemens (similar level as we have with Abacus)
  • Speed up the lagrangian solver
  • Improved guidence on uFluidics & evaporation models
  • Interoperability (HEEDS, AMEsim, System Modelling Workbench but also with non siemens products and open source codes required for LBM, DSMC, PIC, DFT...

Likelihood to Recommend

We still are not able to do without other sw. There are plenty of use cases that we are more or less forced to allow people to use sw from the competition. Training needs to be updated. e.g. the meshing course is outdated and should contain all aspects like AMR, Overset, Boundary layer, quiality checks and service repair (preferably send back to TC if there already not good). Help documentation needs to be updated with LL and current state of the art (including best practices evaporation, chemical librarry, new meshing strategies, boundary slip etc etc.) Using STAR-NX (guidence on where best to do what related to CAD NX vs STAR). Making use of Amesim HEEDS in order to do ROM.

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We use it for vehicle and engine cfd simulations. Majorly for underhood, underbody, cabin, and thermal problems. Engine wise CHT, air flow and etc. With the help of the design optimization module, we are able to solve the frequent problems that occur during the performance evaluations. It makes the Engineer role easy at the organizational level.

Pros

  • Physics setup
  • Postprocess
  • Automation tool
  • Parallel computing

Cons

  • File size will be very big to handle.

Likelihood to Recommend

Star-ccm is well suited for nonlinear and unsteady problems. It solves thermal problems very well. The easy part is that we can customize as per customer choice. The test and Cae correlation for cfd problems will match exactly with Starcom. We have done a lot of procedures with siemens by giving projects to them directly, which helps us to focus on our vehicle development.

Single-GUI Multiphysics with script-free automation capability

Rating: 10 out of 10

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We use Simcenter STAR-CCM+ as a general-purpose CFD solver for things like cooling systems, lube systems, exhaust systems, external hydrodynamics, etc. It is extremely user-friendly, easy to automate, and very capable as a single-tool multi-physics solver.

Pros

  • Automation without the need for scripting
  • Multi-physics sims in single GUI (such as FSI)
  • Strong multi-phase capabilities (air, water, cavitation, etc.)
  • Flexible licensing

Cons

  • Scripting language is Java, not Python (for instances that built-in automation doesn't cover)
  • Error messages not always the most helpful
  • Cannot change simulation settings without license

Likelihood to Recommend

Very good at running large parametric studies or design optimizations where pre/post-processing can be automated without scripting. Mesh generation is very automated and easy to use. Single-GUI multi-physics (CFD, FEA, electromagnetics, etc.) makes running complex sims such as fluid-structure interaction very straightforward and less error-prone. It is a very general solver with tons of capability; therefore, the learning curve can be quite steep for someone without simulation experience.
