We have trusted Trend Micro InterScan Messaging Security to secure our MS Exchange Email Servers for 14 years now. We have two Exchange Servers in place and over 100 users connecting to those. The purpose of this installation is to secure our users/workstations from all kinds of threats in incoming email messages.

Trend Micro InterScan Messaging Security is well suited for bigger companies with huge numbers of incoming and outgoing emails. It is really easy to configure, and once setup, there is not much to be done. So this requires minimal administration efforts. However, as the reporting is weak, if this is essential for a company, then it would be better to look into other alternatives.

Trend Micro InterScan Messaging Security is easier to install and the maintenance effort required is much less than this required by Kasprsky Security for Email Server. However Kasprsky Security for Email Server does have a better GUI and does indeed offer a better protection degree. However, taking into account that both were tested behind a firewall, most of the threats had already been eliminated there...

We wanted to have a solution in place which can help us to eradicate or for that matter minimizes our threats coming over the email. With this solution, we could enable our protection against targeted attacks, ransomware, malicious web links, spear phishing etc. It blocks malware, phishing attacks and spams coming over at the beginning only even before it enters in to the system. It also comes along with DLP feature which helps us to enhance our ecosystem against threats. Data is encrypted while it is transferred or at rest. The deep discovery analyzer dives deeper into its book if it comes across something which looks malicious but has no records so far.

  • Deep Discovery analyzer provides sandboxing and deep threat analyses
  • DLP capabilities are also good. It has a number of pre defined DLP templates
  • Works very well against targeted attacks
  • Lowers impact at the email gateway as it filters away the email in the cloud
  • UI/UX can be improved for a better interface to be delivered to the admin and team
  • You come across false positives also a number of times
  • Log details can become difficult sometimes to search and analyze

If your organization does not have any email security solution, its good to start off with Trend Micro InterScan solution. It helps against malicious emails and malicious traffic by filtering such content at the gateway level itself. With DLP customizable templates already in place place it reduces the TAT to deploy DLP content filtering rules. At the same time, it gives you real time protection against evolving or new threats. Management is easy as it provides single admin dashboard to control everything.

Trend Micro stacks up well vs. other messaging security platforms. We used to use McAfee and Trend seems to give a lot more data. It's also a little more user friendly in terms of what is being recorded.

InterScan Messaging Security is used enterprise-wide as an additional layer of email security. It sits behind our public facing mail gateway and encryption appliance. Its purpose is to scan messages after decryption and provide additional scanning to all incoming messages. The InterScan Messaging Security is integrated with Trend Micro's sandbox solution.

  • Strong malicious message detection.
  • Dashboards give good overview of detections.
  • Flexible rule configurations.
  • Higher false positive rate for Spam detection.
  • Logging can be difficult to search.
Likelihood to Recommend
InterScan Messaging Security is well suited for malicious detection of messages. It is a good addition where a Trend Micro security fabric is deployed.

  • InterScan Messaging Security has caught multiple malicious messages that our public facing mail gateway has missed.

  • Mxtreme and Cisco Email Security Appliance
InterScan Messaging Security provides strong malicious content scanning. Spam detection is good, but does not do as good a job is classifying Marketing type messages. This may be problematic for some organizations. This product is a good addition to preventing infections.
