Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We have been using Veeam Backup for many years to back up our production servers. I believe it is one of the most robust solutions on the market. We chose this software because it offered a wide range of architectural options and very fast backup speeds. We back up heterogeneous servers to a variety of storage media.

Veeam is an essential part of our DR solution. It is a great and reliable product that has given us the peace of mind in the event of a cybersecurity incident as well as a daily backup for our systems. I manage our network and I can rely on Veeam to recover any VM system that had a failure or has become compromised thanks to our Airgap solution

Veeam is primarily a backup technology service system. We use Veeam as a backup service for datacenter virtual servers across 2 datacenters. We also use the virtual lab features to spin up isolated test environments directly from backups. The backup services allow us to restore servers from a point in time at our secondary datacenter.

Pros

Veeam is very good at backing up virtual servers without additional agents.
Veeam is very good at restoring servers in an isolated environment to test things without affecting production.
Veeam is very good at replicating backups to secondary locations so they are readily available in the case of disaster.

Cons

Cost is high but it is a premium technology.
Virtual labs are a bit volatile because a reboot of the proxy server loses the lab.

Likelihood to Recommend

Veeam is a backup system that can use agents or agentless to backup servers. It's great to have an agentless backup service for a large virtual organization but still be able to grab the physical servers that need backup as well. Virtual labs make it easy to test things for restoration.

We use Veeam to back up several VMWare virtual machines and several file shares. Veeam then sends those backups off-site to a cloud storage provider. This eliminates the need to create a custom backup strategy and protect that system ourselves. This also allows the backups to be handled in an encrypted manner end to end.

Cons

I wish the upgrade process was simpler.
Being able to move the backup database after the fact would be nice.

We use Veeam Data Platform as our main backup and disaster recovery tool across all our 35 global site. It protect our on-prem data centers and multi-cloud environments. My team back up thousands of virtual machines, physical servers and databases. The main business problem we trying to solve is guaranteeing uptime for the telecom infrastructure. We just need reliable way to recover from hardware failures or ransomware. It also let us move workloads around seamless. The scope cover all employees and our regional tech hubs.

setting up immutable backups against ransomware is super easy
works great with our multi cloud setup

Cons

Licensing is confusing

We currently use it to perform secure and immutable backups, through a hardened console and immutable repository. The scope of this project helps us to ensure the integrity of the backups as well as being able to scale them to a cloud, thus achieving the separation of an off-site backup.

Cons

Veeam does not have the ability to view a histogram-style timeline showing when backup jobs start and finish.
Backups of created jobs are uploaded directly to the cloud; I would like them to also be manageable locally.
