What is Visual Studio App Center?

Visual Studio App Center, or just App Center available from Microsoft's Azure, is a solution used to build, test, release, and monitor mobile and desktop apps. When creating apps for Android, iOS, macOS, and Windows, App Center allows users to automate build, test, and distribution pipelines, as well as continuously monitor real-time performance.

The solution enables users to:
  • Single, integrated tool for managing build, test, and distribution pipelines
  • Modular, simple-to-use SDKs to quickly start using just the services needed
  • Rich diagnostics and analytics for continuously monitoring app performance and usage
Users can connect to GitHub, Bitbucket, GitLab, or Azure DevOps and automate the build, test, and release pipeline on every commit. With every successful build, App Center also can automatically run UI tests on real-world devices and OS configurations with App Center Test. Release app builds to beta testers or public app stores with App Center Distribute. Deploy hot fixes and updates directly to users’ devices with CodePush.

With App Center Diagnostics, users can prioritize and fix important issues with intelligent crash grouping, complete stack traces, and detailed crash reports. Search and filter by user ID to help isolate and support user-reported issues. Track usage patterns, user adoption, and other engagement metrics with App Center Analytics. Custom events can be used to gather detailed insights on user behaviors that matter most.

Use Cases and Deployment Scope
We used Visual Studio App Center to test how it works with build processes for certain use cases. It also integrates well within test services and complemented what we were doing in Azure for test use case management. Slowly but surely integrating it for our native application processes.
Pros and Cons
  • It supplies the right native integration for test cases both IOS and Android
  • Constant device updates means you are working with the right builds to support product use cases
  • Excels in automated test cases that are easy to implement, monitor, and digest results
  • Webview support was lacking
  • User management seems a bit disconnected from the standard Microsoft ecosystem. Almost feels like you are managing local users and sharing access more than an enterprise solution
  • Price could be better
  • Buggy on some of the latest versions of windows
Likelihood to Recommend
Honestly, it's an all around solution that needs some enhancements. Need to build an app, check! Need to test that app, check! Need to debug that app, check! Visual Studio App Center is a well rounded platform for multiple types of builds and services.

  • Helps test new proposed releases with ease
  • Cuts down on local build issues as it does do a good job with local development environments as well
Alternatives Considered
The biggest benefit is in integrations and plug-ins, as well as the fact that it's not open source. I know open source is popular, but we have all been on the downside of open source and waiting for things to be voted up or a contribution to fix an issue. This alone makes VSAC a nice solution! Plus, it comes with a complete IDE integration of services, documentation, and is light weight.
