VMware ThinApp has been used to virtualize and package multiple applications, for isolation purposes and for compatibility issues. We have packaged multiple frameworks and runtimes (like Java or .NET) to embed them with specific applications without impacting locally installed apps. Longer ago, we also used ThinApp to allow Internet Explorer 6 uses on newer operating systems (for older web apps compatibility).
  • Secure containers
  • Easy packaging and capture
  • Simple publishing
  • VMware seems to have abandoned the product (no functionality evolutions, only security patches).
  • VMware ThinApp is really difficult to buy standalone, it comes packaged with other products.
VMware ThinApp is really great for simple packaging projects, standalone apps, or older apps that needs specific runtimes or environment which are not available on target operating systems. Integration with VMware Horizon is simple, and deployment is easy by using shares for storing captured apps, or MSI packages for deploying by group strategies.

  • VMware ThinApp allowed us to maintain older apps, avoiding refactoring costs.
  • ThinApp used with VMware Horizon is great to separate desktop and app management, allowing to fine-tune desktop delivery to end users.
  • Microsoft Application Virtualization (App-V)
VMware ThinApp capturing and publishing is way more simple than the App-V approach, but App-V seems to be more suitable for the largest deployments. Application Virtualization seems to be less and less common today, as VDI approaches can solve some issues (like publishing apps from a virtual desktop instead of locally installed or virtualized packages).

We have some web-based applications that will only run in Internet Explorer 8, and these are required to run alongside other web-based applications that run on Internet ExpIrer 11. Without VMWare ThinApp, this would not be possible. I also run Dameware with ThinApp, and it runs flawlessly.
  • Virtualizes applications for easy deployment
  • Allows you to run two versions of the same software at the same time.
  • Outstanding customer support
  • I have had difficulty Thinapping Office 2013
  • Several applications are trial and error as they fail often, with little to no documentation
  • Price could be cheaper
VMware ThinApp is ideal for a business that is still using PCs over Thin Clients because often times when using web-based applications there are some that simply will not run in Internet Explorer 11. ThinApped packages are also much easier to deploy as the packages that I make, all you need to do is simply copy the folder into Program Files.

  • ThinApp is our go to for application virtualization
  • Allows us to run multiple versions of Internet Explorer
  • Cuts down on deployment time.
The only application that I have ever used that does exactly what VMware ThinApp does is Cameyo, and VMware is light years ahead of them in terms of usability. VMWare is the industry standard for application virtualization, and they do this by making a powerful product that is remarkably simple to use and top it off with A1 customer support.
