Workflow development and management

The vRealize Orchestrator workflow designer is a drag-and-drop workflow creator that enables users to produce simple to complex workflows. With it, building complex automation routines can be accomplished quickly. The workflow engine allows users to create workflows either by using custom building blocks initiated by the user, or by using third-party and VMware software provided on VMware Solution Exchange. With vRealize Orchestrator workflows and built-in plug-ins, users can easily perform tasks, such as:

• Assign an IP address from an IP address management tool
• Generate a work order ticket
• Update a configuration management database
• Configure a load balancer
• Initiate a system backup

vRealize Orchestrator enables users to create new building blocks with a built-in scripting engine. The scripting engine is enhanced with basic version control, variable type checking, namespace management and exception handling. It can be used with custom building blocks for actions, workflows and policies. vRealize Orchestrator supports multiple scripting languages, including PowerShell, Node.js and Python. All vRealize Orchestrator workflows have version history, packaging and rollback capabilities, which allow for basic change management capabilities during the distribution of processes to different project stages and locations. Every step in the workflow is saved in a content database, which enables server restarts without losing the state and context perimeters. This feature is useful for processes that take a long time to execute. Centralized management provides a central way to manage processes and ensure administrators use up-to-date, version-controlled scripts. This provides proper change control across the environment.
