Overall Satisfaction with Cisco Catalyst 8000 Edge Platforms

Cisco Catalyst 8000 Edge Platforms routers are used in our organization at the Internet Edge and for branch connectivity. At the Internet edge we leverage redundant pair of routers which utilize BGP to establish peering with two internet service providers. Midsize routers with redundant power supplies are used for this role.
For small branch connectivity, smaller router models are used, combining routing and basic security functions within a single device.

Pros

  • Robustness
  • Stability
  • Support (TAC)
  • Feature richness

Cons

  • Simplified licensing
  • better documentation around pluggable modules
  • more detailed public performance numbers
  • Improved reachability of Internet facing services by using redundant BGP internet edge design
  • Better branch robustness by utilizing mobile backhaul as a hot standby
Either you deploy those routers as a standalone, or as part of the SD-WAN fabric, the amount of features and settings you can configure on them, is well beyond any other vendor or product on the market. While this may bring some configuration complexity, availability of support for variaty of different protocols and features allows you to solve almost any network challenge you may face.
  • Cisco 4000 Series Integrated Services Routers (ISR 4000)
Cisco Catalyst 8000 Edge Platforms routers were a replacement for an older Cisco 4000 ISR router platform. While maintaining very familiar configuration interface, improved performance and built in redundancy options (power supplies), and long expected life time of the product made upgrade decision much easier. Consolidating and standardizing licensing across our routers was also an improvment compared to the previous generation.
