Overall Satisfaction with Cisco Catalyst SD-WAN

We are using Cisco Catalyst SD-WAN for providing connections for our new generation mobile car vehicles. It addresses problems with changing the quality of connection and load balancing between APN connection and satellite internet connection. Thanks to Cisco Catalyst SD-WAN we are able to create dynamic policies that are provided for every new device that is connected to our network.

Pros

  • Load balancing
  • Measuring links quality
  • Automatically creating ipsec tunnels

Cons

  • Better consistency between configuration groups and device templates
  • Configuration groups would support more features
  • The maximum number of TLOCs for core region
  • Faster deployment of new locations
  • Detailed assurance view
  • Centralized upgrades
Overall usability of Cisco Catalyst SD-WAN relies on the customer's needs. For customers with lots of branches and bigger network topologies with more than two transport connections, it is well suited. For smaller customers with one or two locations, it is not suited at all - because price vs usability is not that good.
Cisco Catalyst SD-WAN is more sophisticated and has a wider range of functionalities than the Meraki SD-WAN solution. For Meraki SD-WAN you cannot configure all policies that it is possible for Cisco Catalyst SD-WAN. Meraki SD-WAN is more as plug and play solution. For Cisco Catalyst SD-WAN you have to have good knowledge of how to implement and configure all your requests.

Yes

Did Cisco Catalyst SD-WAN live up to sales and marketing promises?

Yes

Did implementation of Cisco Catalyst SD-WAN go as expected?

Yes

Would you buy Cisco Catalyst SD-WAN again?

Yes

Cisco Catalyst SD-WAN solution is best suited in network topologies with two or more inter connections. Based on our experience, we are using Cisco SD-WAN for connecting mobile devices in vehicles. There are two connections in each vehicle - one internet via satellite and one LTE APN connection. Cisco Catalyst SD-WAN can build overlay topology over these connections and use the better quality connection for data flows.
