Overall Satisfaction with Cisco ThousandEyes
We use Cisco ThousandEyes to monitor nodes in colocation facilities around the USA. The biggest problem that Cisco ThousandEyes addresses is being able to do off-net test to compare between our network and external networks. This allows us to create historical baselines and verify web reachability for customers that may have issues getting to specific websites. Sometimes those issues are local but Cisco ThousandEyes helps us verify if they are global or part of a larger issue.
Pros
- Easy to setup
- Easy to use
- Good support team, quick response
- High level of customization for dashboards and testing
Cons
- Pricing = unit cost
- Great ROI on using endpoint agents to help diagnose end user issues when they can't explain the issue.
- The cost per unit should probably be evaluated, it's not awful pricing but doesn't feel like a big value when buying them in bulk like you'd think you could get.
- Cisco ThousandEyes is a robust platform that has given our Network & Backbone teams the flexibility of testing and visibility into the network as a whole from many different levels.
Kentik Synthetics is a newer competitor of Cisco ThousandEyes. Both do very similar things but Cisco ThousandEyes currently is the more mature platform. However, the pricing of Synthetics is very attractive. It does not have the robustness of Cisco ThousandEyes or the off-net test leveraging (# of outside companies partnered with them) but has made many improvements in the past 2 years.

Using Cisco ThousandEyes
6 - The teams that primarily use the ThousandEyes platform are our Network and Backbone Operations technical teams. The Network Operations team handles our MDU and FTTP services that we provide. The Backbone Operations team handles all the colocation facilities, interconnects and routing/architecture of the backbone network that supports our customers.
6 - There's 2 different skill sets that we have for suppoting ThousandEyes on our network. The first is our server admin who handles the VM's that are used for hosting the ThousandEyes Agents on the network. The next is our network engineer and network techs that build all the tests inside ThousandEyes. Both of these positions require technical acumen to perform the roles.
- Outage troubleshooting
- Comparing on-net vs off-net network performance
- Historical network data
- BGP network changes
- Custom page load tests for specific websites to prove performance
- Once they integrate more with NetFlow data we can have more powerful single platform monitoring of the network
Evaluating Cisco ThousandEyes and Competitors
- Scalability
- Ease of Use
Wanted a solution that was very easy to use, had a simple UI to make it easy for team members to figure out and setup.
Wouldn't do anything different, in the 8 years we've had ThousandEyes it's done a great job.

No, our plan is just limited to the specific amount of credits for the testing we needed to do. We do pay for the additional licenses for the 'endpoint agents'. This allows us to have customers run tests directly on their hardware for us to pinpoint issues on their network.
Every time we've reached out to our customer success manager it's been a great experience. They always make sure to connect us with a support engineer that can answer our questions. Admittedly most of our questions are pretty simple for them but they've always been quick to handle them. I just wish a customer success manager would be on our account longer than a few months to a year, they seem to have alot of turnover.
