Overall Satisfaction with CosmoLex

I use CosmoLex mostly for my trust accounting. I am a sole practitioner and mostly do fixed fee work, so I haven't used the timekeeping functions too much. I generally use other software for document generation, so I have used the document generation features for just a few things. I have one assistant who had never used CosmoLex before starting with me, and she typically uses it more than I do.
  • Cloud-based - accessible from anywhere.
  • Very easy to get started.
  • Intuitive user interface (for the most part).
  • No need for separate accounting software.
  • Check printing is very easy and smooth, especially when printing multiple checks.
  • Flexibility to integrate with other software to import billing.
  • Multiple line data entry - when adding multiple expenses manually, you have to wait for the software to load after each entry.
  • Loading can be slow - this includes generating reports, preparing checks, inputting data entries, moving from matter to matter - you have to wait a few moments with each action.
  • Cost - more costly than some other software options (similar in price to Clio).
  • Rather than pay for licenses, you pay per user, so you can't just purchase 3 licenses for 4 users without having some issues. When one user logs in and someone is already logged in under that username, the first user is logged out, even if they are in the middle of doing something.
  • Took a lot of headache out of accounting (I started with Clio which integrates with QuickBooks and it was a nightmare dealing with it until I switched to CosmoLex).
  • An approved trust accounting software is required in my jurisdiction, and CosmoLex allowed me to get started with very little delay.
  • When transitioning to a different office, CosmoLex was new to my new assistants, and they were set in their ways. There are currently few legal assistants in the area with any familiarity with CosmoLex, so there is always a preference for PCLaw or EsiLaw among the staff. CosmoLex ruffled a few feathers when my staff were forced to learn something new.
I used CosmoLex over PC Law mostly because it was cloud-based, and I used it over Clio because the accounting for Clio required the use of both Clio and QuickBooks which made for very inefficient data entry. CosmoLex is slower than PCLaw when inputting entries, but I believe that in the long run, it will be better as CosmoLex is better situated to move forward with new technology.

Do you think CosmoLex delivers good value for the price?

Yes

Are you happy with CosmoLex's feature set?

Yes

Did CosmoLex live up to sales and marketing promises?

Yes

Did implementation of CosmoLex go as expected?

Yes

Would you buy CosmoLex again?

Yes

Because it is cloud based, CosmoLex is well suited for a lawyer starting up a practice as there is no need for a server. It is also very easy to use from home as it doesn't require a remote session to login, but can be used from any device.

It is not well suited for a practice that requires a very fast pace for accounting as it takes a bit of time for each transaction to load, frustrating the user and causing them to lose momentum. On the other hand, if time is taken to set things up, there are a few tools that make importing expenses much quicker, and time can be made up by just taking some time to set things up.
