Overall Satisfaction with Dell PowerVault

We have the PowerVault deployed in 3 different locations. We use it internally for corporate infrastructure as well as dedicated to clients. It serves as both primary data storage as well as back up storage for some clients.
  • Simple to set up.
  • Single pane of glass to monitor several arrays.
  • Ability to scale.
  • Maintenance is tough. Dell recommends bringing the unit down for any kind of maintenance of upgrades.
  • Internal IOPS monitoring could be greatly improved.
  • Arrays are locked down to Dell licensed disks.
  • It has provided a great start for our business. Great entry into our client base.
  • Not great when you want to scale.
Pure Storage is much better overall. If you need to have a 7.2K solution or an array where you have several speeds needed (7K, 10K, or SSD) then Powervault is good. It is also much cheaper than Pure Storage.

Dell PowerVault is:
  • Well suited to hybrid on premise solutions.
  • Not well suited for enterprise cloud solutions.
