Overall Satisfaction with FactSet Workstation

I use FactSet Workstation for portfolio analysis, risk models, equity screening, data management and market monitoring in my role as a portfolio manager. FactSet screens and tools help with generating investment ideas and portfolio attribution. The main problem FactSet solves for our firm is the aggregation of data into one platform. That feature is a huge time saver compared to piece-meal data from several sources.

Pros

  • Aggregating financial and economic data
  • Adding new features
  • Reliability in data and uptime

Cons

  • More timely customer service
  • Easier uploading of data
  • Price negotiation
  • A lot of time savings due to the centralized data
  • Risk reporting / insights have saved us a few times
  • Incremental performance gains with portfolio analytics
FactSet certainly takes a while to get used to - I had used Bloomberg at a previous job. There are some training opportunities, but I think those could be improved on FactSet's end. Uploading data to FactSet always seems to be more difficult than it needs to be. But, like everything else, once you use it for a few years, you get used to it.
Bloomberg does a much better job at alerts and proprietary news coverage. Charting is also much more intuitive with Bloomberg. It's also very easy to trade directly through Bloomberg instead of using an OMS. FactSet's pricing is more competitive than Bloomberg and FactSet is better with performance attribution. I'd say portfolio analytics are about the same between the two.

Do you think FactSet Workstation delivers good value for the price?

Yes

Are you happy with FactSet Workstation's feature set?

Yes

Did FactSet Workstation live up to sales and marketing promises?

No

Did implementation of FactSet Workstation go as expected?

I wasn't involved with the implementation phase

Would you buy FactSet Workstation again?

Yes

It's very well suited for managing a portfolio of equites. It's also excellent for financial and economic research. FactSet would not be appropriate for smaller mangers due to its high cost. Also, if you're looking to integrate outside data sources into your FactSet jobs, it can be very difficult. We've had better luck using Bloomberg for that.
